1952 8NB I delivered my tractor to a respectable mechanic a year ago and everything worked great. All of a sudden when I run the tractor the amp meter runs negative and pegs out at -30 amps at 3/4 throtle.

Could use some help here.

Thanks.

At first glance it would seem that you have an almost direct short someplace, like your voltage regulator or some wiring. You don't mention if your battery is going dead on you. It shouldn't take long to happen with a 30 amp discharge.
Are you running an original 6 volt neg ground system or has it been modified to 12 volts? Does the discharge appear with the ignition key on and the engine not running? Do you see the discharge with the ignition key off? Does the ammeter reading depend upon engine speed or remain pretty constant?
There are a lot of possibilities which could possibly be narrowed down with some additional info.

I have a 6-volt battery, the 3rd in 1-year. When the engine idle at low speed the amp meter is less than 30 amps (-05 to -20), but when I go full throtle it pegs out at -30 amps.

As I stated earlier, I recently had a completly new wiring harness installed by a reputable mechanic and it worked fine for a while.

One side note, last spring when I first started the tractor after winter, I sat down on the cushioned seat and felt several stinging pains on my fanny. I thought I had put the tractor in neutral but when I jumped off the tractor it took off. It headed from the terrace above our house, went between our power pole and support line, across the front yard and towards the pasture (brome grass about 2-feet tall) and heading towards my pond. Being the manly man I thought I was, I chase the tractor hoping to shut it down before it went into the pond. Well, I jumped, missed my target, and got run over by the right rear wheel and tumbled by the blade, which fortunately for me was in it's highest position.

I was fortunate. It rolled me pretty good and I recall coming to a cross-legged sitting position. The bottom line is the tractor went into the pond. I've done a lot of work on it since, draining fluids, changing points, etc. But the generator issue is a mystery. I'm thinking of just buying a new generator.

Run over and fortunate to be alive. the fortune comes from living in God's country. Life in the country.

Thanks

Man, you are lucky to be able to talk about what happened!! But, I must admit, I did chuckle until I read where you were run over and rolled by the blade. My guess is, you need a new voltage regulator. That one is probably fried. Also I would have the generator rebuilt rather than buying a new one. I would think it's a heck of allot cheaper to rebuild it. You can take it off the tractor and have it checked out at a good shop to see if it is in need of rebuilding first. Also, the wire may be running through the amp meter the wrong way, and registering a discharge, when infact the old generator may be pumping out all it's worth and with a bad voltage regulator it won't take long to fry everything. I would also think if there were a short in the wires, it should really be smoking with that kind of amps going through the wires. Just my guess. Good luck!!!

Also, perhaps the unit is wired backwards and the generator is running full charge??
Is it capable of putting out 30 amps?
