On the 8Ns with an external air pre-cleaner that has the small jar attached - are you supposed to keep a small amount of oil in the jar or leave it dry? Thanks

I run mine dry, and out here in dusty Wyoming, Mine picks up allot of dust and bigger chunks of dirt etc. Have emptied mine 2 times so far this year. Of course I empty it when there is only a little bit in the jar, but it does work. Just changed oil in my air cleaner today and it wasn't all that bad, but there was some crud build up in the bottom of it. I was expecting allot more crud than there was, so maybe the precleaner does help.

I think you can leave it dry, but I have seen some postings where it was suggested that a small amount of water in it would help. Mine is kept dry, and it does pick up dirt particles. Since they were discontinued, I suspect that they weren't all that efficient, but maybe they just were in the way, getting broken off. Maybe the tractors were cheaper to produce without them, too.

I think you leave it dry; it is a centrifugal trap for larger dirt particles. Empty it out periodically. Mostly these are lost or broken off .
