I was crusing out on the ol' farm shredding away when Bessy just gave it up. Like she was out of gas but I had just filled her up. I got off and after a little checking I found that there was no spark. Now the cows have been helpful by removing all the spark plug wires, with out leaving wiring information. What was that order again? What are some of the probable causes for losing the spark? Surely she has a little life left... I am planning on replacing the 6 volt coil with a 12, due to prior upgrading of the rest of the system, (not mine) and the balast resistor, new wires (don't leave tractors around cows), condenser and points. What else do I need to check?

Alan,

My tractor cuts out every now and then. It is the ignition key that is doing it. Check the simple things first.

Firing order is 1-2-4-3
You haven't said whether its a front mount or a side mount dist. I'd start by verifying that you have proper point operation. Voltage at the point side of the coil should be the same as the ignition side (Battery voltage) when the points are open and should go to zero when the points close. If this is a front mount dist they are renowned for failing when they get hot. Also you might try jumping across your ignition switch using a wire with two alligator clips attached. The keyed ignition switches can fail at a moments notice also. HTH

It is a side mount Distributor.

Also, got to thinking. (Danger Will Robinson!) I call it an 8n. It is a recent purchase and i do not really know if it is an 8n for sure, it has an 800 on the front. Does this mean anything, or do I need to look at a motor number?

Alan..... that 800 number sound suspect?

8N's have a "flathead" cylinder head and all others have OHV's (special rocker arm covers) and they all have a side mount distributor. Just early 8N's and 2N's and 9N's have front mount distributors. (decidedly different).

To bad the ignition coil wasn't sparking when the cows decided to taste your sparkplug wires (grin)..... .Dell
