8N idles fine, won't power up

I was brushhogging yesterday when halfway through the job my 8N just refused to run right at higher RPM. It behaved like it was either starved for air or gas. It runs extremely rough at everything above a fast idle. It even backfired once.

I've done what I think was a proper carb adjustment (from the ford owner's manual) but still won't run right above an idle.

Ideas on where to start looking for problems? It was running fine before yesterday afternoon.

Your problem sound like a fuel flow or fuel mix problem. There are a number of screens in the line which can clog. (carb inlet, just after sediment bowl, and in-tank) All these should be cleaned. Let some gas run in a can from the line where it goes into the carb. It should flow well. My 2N did the same thing and it wasn't that any one place was bad but all were a "little" dirty. Also richen the fuel mix by upping the main adjust knob. Check the manual but I think you turn counter clockwise.

If it was a coil it would probably just shut down and it wouldn't even idle when hot. But would run good after a short cooling period.

Good Luck!

Rob, if you are absolutley sure there is no obstruction in the fuel lines you may want to replace the coil. I have heard or this several times and in more than a few instances this helped.

Hello,
I would guess a fuel flow obstruction. There is a screen filter on the carb inlet elbow which may be plugged or you may have a some dirt inside the carb pluging the main jet. Regards, EEA

I'll check that. I already checked the air intake and cleaned the sediment bowl, but I don't know the the carb had a screen on it too.

I had a similar problem and after checking the fuel flow and filters, I rebuilt the carburetor. This solved the problem, although I'm having a rough time getting it adjusted properly. Runs smooth with good power but doesn't respond to the governor like it did before and doesn't idle down like it should. I've never had a lot of luck adjusting carburetors...must have stepped out when they passed out that skill.

It has been suggested to me (in another thread) that not idling down could be a governor problem and not a carb problem.
