I have a 1948 8n with a front mounted dist. I have changed the cap, rotor, condenser, points, wires, plugs, coil, and seat cushion! I can't get any spark. Any ideas?

There is an insulator on the post inside your distributor where the condenser wire connects. Check to make sure that this connection is not shorted to ground. Also, check by turning the distributor shaft, that the points are not staying closed, or that the points are actually closing and opening.(must have 'on-off' switching action). Another thing to check is the conical spring on the bottom of the coil...it must make good contact with the concave brass screw that the condeser wire is connected to. Another thing to check is voltage to the coil. If the ballast resistor is open, you won't get voltage to the terminal on top of the coil when the key is turned on. One last thing is the ignition switch. If it is bad, you won't get voltage to the ballast resistor or the coil.
Hope this helps,
Gary

For a simple test... connect a voltmeter from ground to the top connection of the coil...Then turn on the key...You should read some voltage...If no then suspect the switch or resistor...if yes then turn-over the engine with the starter... The voltage should waver between 3 & 6v...if no then the point circuit is at fault...if yes then the high voltage circuit is at fault. good hunting...geo

Just went thru this too. As previously mentioned, be sure your copper foil conductor is well away from the post that it connects to. The center of the post IS grounded. Even with all the new parts, take 600 grit sandpaper, fold it, and run it thru the closed points. An Ohmmeter should read zero across the points when closed.

On another note:
A pet peeve of mine is being sure that positive ground is used-I see many around here that someone replaced the battery and used negative grounding. It doesn't seem to hurt anything, but the purist in me makes me suggest it!
