HELP ! Engine Bearing Questions

I recently noticed a knocking on high acceleration and when under load after a rebuild. I dropped the pan to check to see if all the bearings had been torqued properly, which they had. But when I grabbed the piston bearing, I could move it back and fourth on the crankshaft. I used plastigauge to see how much clearance was between the piston bearing and crankshaft and it was greater than .009 (my platigauge only went up to .009). My guess is it is probably .010-.012. When I got my rebuilt kit, I took in my old bearings and they were measured to be .062 (if I remember correctly, they were thrown out after the rebuild) The store didn't have the bearings in stock, so they were drop shipped directly to me (they are Clevite PB200). I didn't measure them before I put them in, I will measure them when I get to work in a bit and post if I got the right bearings. I have the following questions...

1. What are the standard size for piston bearings..?..I do not think any work has ever been done on this tractor, the main bearings were measured to be standard according to the parts store (.090 if I remember correctly).

2. What type of clearance should there be between the bearing and crankshaft ? .010-.012 seems extremely excessive, especially when I can rattle it back and fourth on the crankshaft. I think this is the culprit of my knocking.

Any answers or other comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks !

If you don't already have one, you should consider investing in a service manual. You will find it invaluable.

UPDATE :

I checked the piston bearings, and they are the same size as those that were taken out before my rebuild (.062).

Why would it knock after my rebuild rather than before with the same size piston bearings ?

Is it possible that the engine was so tired and my compression so low that it couldn't build up the power to make it knock ?

Richard,

The crankshaft should measure 2.100" for the rod journals and 2.250" for the main journals. Useally the bearing clearance is .001"-.002". You can not just measure the thickness of the bearing insert, you need to wash and dry off the bearing inserts and connecting rod. Then install the inserts and torque them down to spec. This can also be done with plastic gauge on the crank if it is washed and dried also. You might check the the mains while your at it.

Good Luck,
Kevin (WA)

The parts place is going to give me some larger bearings. I am going to measure the journals to see how they compare to the specs you posted. I will put in the new bearings and use the plastic gauge to see if it gives me the correct clearance. Thanks !
