i will be replacing the fluids in the 9n this week. We have Sanel, VIP and NAPA auto stores here locally. Can someone recommend type of oil and transmission fluids that would be most compatible with these old engines and transmssions? Being the neophyte I am, I want to ensure that I do not purchase a brand, or type that would do harm (example: detergent type oils). Thanks in advance for your help. 9N'er

9N'er,
Somehow, after the 4th, you have just got to post us some pictures of this project. We've all been hanging on hoping you'd get to do what you wanted, now we want to see it.
Sandy

9n'er....congradulations on all your progress. I've been enjoying all of your trials, and I'm sure it will all be worth it when you are done.

The advice you got on fluid is great, but here's one important thing. When you change the gear oil and the engine oil, make sure it's after an hour or so of hard work. I drained the tranny lube out of mine, and stuck my finger up in the drain, only to feel about a half inch of sludge. Not hard sludge, but suspended junk. I poured the old fluid back in through a screened funnel, and went out and brush hogged. When I got backed and drained it, the sludge was gone.

Also, I'd go with the 80/90. I got a GL1 version "especially for vintage fords" at Quality farm and fleet. I had previously used 134, but my tranny was loud. the 90 weight quieted it right down.

Good Luck
Steve

Steve...i drained the fluids after it sat for about a month just before I sandblasted it. BUT, I spent a good 90minutes flushing the grudge and you name it from the transmission and rear housings til I could see pure and clean glistening metal in those campartments. I tore up my hands and arms getting down in there and pushing the crudge out, flushing it with gas, pushing it our some more, and then, I used my HVLP gun at 120 PSI, and filled it with kerosene, and sprayed into the nooks and crannies, then flushed out the crudge some more with clean kerosene. I went through 8 gallons of gas and 3 gallons of kerosene doing htis but it was spotless inside the middle and rear housings, my hands were cut up from the works; trying to get in and around and through, but I tellya; she's cleaner than new in there. Yeccha, what a bunch of crap there was..it must have been 1.5 - 2 inches deep or more.

I'm not nitpicking by any means!! I think llamas was refering to the "Air Filter" oil cup, and not the oil filter. Use the same oil in the air filter as you do in the engine. Dave

hey that's good...I and glad for the clarification. see my reply to Llamas below Dave. We're getting close...the tractor coming together, and the 4th. I want to have this 9N next to that early serial numbered 9N I just saw with the aluminum dash (see Vintage Fords post I made about two days ago). In a fun sort of competitive way, this average old 9N I have will be outstanding next to it; shining to beat the band. I can't wait to drive it up next to it, and casually observe the reaction. what fun!

You did a pretty complete motor overhaul on this ride, as I recall?

That being the case, I would use

In the motor, straight SAE 30 detergent oil in the summer months. In the winter months, 10W30 detergent oil. Obviously "summer" and "winter" are relative terms but if you get a frost, that's winter.

In the oil filter cup, whatever's in the motor.

In the radiator, 50/50 water and ethylene glycol antifreeze. Toss in a bottle of BarsLeaks or similar, not to fix any leaks (you don't have any of those, naturally) but because it will lube and condition the water pump.

In the transmission/hydraulics, 80/90 weight mineral oil. Probably the closest you will find to this is 80/90 weight, GL5 grade, sold for auto differentials and such. Reason I suggest 80/90 weight over the more modern 134 hydraulic/transmission fluid is that you do have some wear in the differential and that tends to suggest you need gear lubrication more than you do swift hydraulic performance.

Are you on track for July 4th?

JMHO.

llater,

llamas

9ner, care to share your hvlp experience? Have you done it before? What did you set pressure to on tank? How big of a tank do you have etc...

Plan on painting my 8n this holiday weekend. Have parts all over the garage and am a bit nervous as I have never sprayed before and am going to try the hvlp gun.

Thanks for the help and good luck making the 4th.

third party image

After fighting water in my air system for years, I built this system in my shop last week getting ready to sandblast and paint my 8N. The top line goes 25 ft. down the wall and then back. The top filter is for painting only and is brought on line with quick connect hose. Now I can sand blast for 3 hrs and not one drop of water!--Michael
