She has no radiator cap...never did
should I try a cap?Repalce or rebuild the water pump?Reset the timing? I know they are simple engines and thast seems to be the prob...I always look for the hard fix....crazy ehh....

I have a 9N and had overheating problems. After messing around a lot I found out a number of things:

1. First and foremost, if it is anywhere near original equipment, the radiator is probably crudded up. As was said, unless the pump is leaking or loose or noisey it is probably good. Without hesitating I would pull the radiator and have it replaced or recored. I pulled mine, took it to a radiator shop (reputable I thought) who boiled it out. Got it home and it still overheated. Took it out and had it recored (about the same price as an aftermarket job). Worked great. Think I paid for a paint job the first time around.

2. One thing overlooked is the block can really be crudded up. I pulled the head and the passages were pretty cruddy. I had previously flushed it without a lot of success (obvously). Something else you can do is to pull the two "freeze plugs" on the left side. See how much crud is in there. By picking and using bottle brushes and water to flush, you would be surprised how much junk will come out. The best cure is to have it tanked and hot cleaned when you have it rebuilt (should it come to that).

3. Other things to consider on the 9N - if originality is not your prime concern - is replacing the pusher fan with a puller and putting on a fan shroud if you don't have one.

These will all help, bit by bit. And has also been said, if you fill these up to the top, they will blow out about an inch to inch and a half of anti freeze out of the radiator. Don't confuse this with overheating. This is normal expansion. If you run normal 50-50 antifreeze you won't boil until about 230, higher with a pressure system.

That has exhausted what little knowlege I have on this. Back to screensaver mode.

Need a cap, for sure. I'd be inclined to remove the radiator, have it flow-checked at a radiator shop and rodded-out if needed. The water pump is probably ok, unless you see it leaking from the weep-hole or hear a lot of noise from it. The N cooling system is probably oversized for the tractor, so iy usually takes a lot of abuse before it causes big problems.
