Since I began this glorified tractor painting, and assembling, fixing and aquiring the original parts for this old 9N I have had many cases of "Itch Head." I scratch my head constantly trying to figure things out. It's fun, but the wife thinks I have the mange or dandruff, and is suggesting that I see a dermatalogist or psycho-analyst, even a marriage counselor rather than all of the new friends I've made in town, like the radiator and spring man, the guys at NAPA, the tire people at Costello's, John and his friends at the auto body shop, and you name it... Here's the question I've been pondering for some time...and now I will ask: Mid-year 1940 9N (serial number 36149) dashboards and steering cloumn holes: I can't figure it out. I have more holes on the left dash and column than I do in my head (although the wife would argue that point...), and I would like to know what went in those holes (my wife would like to know what's in my head). Here is the (approximate) size and locations: 1. * Upper left corner dash: 1/2" (approx.) hole. 2. * Left side dash bottom; right of center: 3/8" (approx.) hole. 3. * Upper left side steering column (not the location of the black Ford plate, but the vertical section of the upper steering column) 5/8" (approx.) elongated hole. Right side of dash: choke pull knob...that's an easy one. It is the left side of the dash that has me perplexed. All of these holes do not seem to be drilled at a later date. They seem to be a part of the casting. I do have the safety starter on the transmission housing etc. for this tractor...so, I am wondering if there was a key start on the steering column or dash? Was this standard? My guess is that the upper left corner was once a light switch? the smaller 3/8" hole on the lower left side of the dash for ignition light? and the steering column hole for a key switch...all of these pieces are missing of course. Does anyone have these parts...?? Thanks in advance, I guess you can say i've got the itch to restore this old tractor.

There should be a keyswitch on the left side of the steering column near the top. This switch only turns the ignition on and off -- you still use the button to start the tractor.
