Can someone tell me the proper way to adjust the steering box? I have alot of slop in the steering which isn't to terrible in low range, but put it high range and you have to put your feet on the steering arms and push just to keep her from self distructing. The drag link ends are in good shape w/no slop. The other thing I was wondering is could it be an alignment problem? She is a 1951 8N SN.345688.

You have the late model steering box. First, alignement will not cause steering slop. With the tractor on level ground, turn the steering wheel to the left and right. Notice if there is any up and down movement of the steering shaft. If there is, then your upper and lower thrust bearings may be defective. If there is no up and down movement (Greater than .010) then notice the steering arm engagement. If you turn the steering wheel more than several degrees and the steering arm does not move, then try to adjust the adjusting screw (front first) inward, then the back to eliminate play. Also note if the bushings on the steering arms are tight. The center of the shafts should not move back and forth when turning the wheel.

Which years of 8ns got the newer style of steering gearbox. Mine is a '49. It has no up and down play in the shaft, but lot of play between sector arms. Hoping it is an easy fix.

Try the link below.
John Smith has the best ID site for N series tractors that I have seen.
You should be able to determine almost to the serial number where the switch in steering boxes was made.
Scroll down about half way through the page, and you will find photos of the 2 types of steering boxes on the 8N's.

Hope this helps!

Mine is a 49 and has the late steering box.. I do not know exactly when they started. It is easy to tell though, since the late steering box has the screw for adjustment as where the older design has the offset steering arm bushing. If it has the adjustment screw, see the above post. If it has the eccentric bushing then you would need to remove the bolts on the eccentric housing and turn the bushing to decrease lash.
