Sounds like a points problem to me. Replace the points. I am looking at putting one of the electronic ignition set ups in mine. I am going to run a post on elctronic ignitions - look for it.

From what I've read... a backfire through the carb indicated a too lean fuel mixture.... maybe carb problems or maybe not enough fuel flow (plugged filter in strainer, or in elbow to the carb.

Try removing the air inlet coupling on the carb. Then spray in some engine starting fluid (available at all auto parts stores), and crank. If it catches and runs a little, then if I were you I'd look into fuel obstructions or carb problems. The elbow in the fuel line to the carb is easy to remove and check, as is the screen in the fuel strainer..

Might want to check the fuel shutoff valve on the tank, and the fuel level in the tank. Make sure there is enough fuel in the tank (at least 1 gallon) and the valve is open enough.

Just my thoughts of were I'd start...

Have fun tractoring....
