Hydrolics problem 2N, has anyone heard of this one?

I wonder if anyone has heard of this one? I replaced the hydrolic safety valve a while back because the lift was leaking down rather quickly. It made an improvement but still leaked down slowly. So I figured I'd have to do the piston soon. All of a sudden it's real bad, It won't even pick up the back blade unless I rev it up half way and as soon as I slow it down it drops. So I pull it apart and pop the piston out and it looks fine? Now I'm puzzled. I looked at the housing and started cleaning it up. The gasket that goes between the piston and the housing looks to be blown out. Could that be it? Could I be so lucky as to only have to replace the gasket that I already have? I'm wondering if the housing or piston assembly could be warped and let the gasket blow easier. Should I use gasket sealer? Has anyone had this happen? Thanks.

You could have checked this while it was all still together. Run it with a load on it and look through the inspection cover.

However, be that as it may. Yes, this gasket can fail and yes, that can be your problem. You need to replace it anyway. But get two gaskets, and use the second on the rear mounting location, even though there's no oil flow to seal. It'll help to keep the front one flat.

The general consensus is to use no gasket cement on hydraulic gaskets, but clean all surfaces perfectly.

I just overhauled my 8N cylinder and yes, the blown gasket will do just what you said. I didn't blow the gasket, but like a DA, forgot to tighten down the 4 bolts after reinstalling the top plate. No power to lift, and drain right down.
Looked in the inspection hole and saw where the fluid was leaking and figger'd out what I did. I don't think gasket seal would be needed in this application. I'd try just a new gasket. HTH

Check the clearance of the piston to the cylinder. .0025" max. The gasket could be the culprit, but since you have it apart anyway, replace the piston with an NAA set, hone the cylinder if it's real shiny in spots.

Is the NAA type O rings? I was thinking I should go to O rings. I guess they hold a lot better than the old ring type. I see them for $20.00 plus the ring etc.
