My 8N idles fine and with the throttle full open doesn'y miss a beat. Howver, with the bushhog attavhed and under heavy load it starts missing and almost dies. Pulling the choke (closing) allows the engine to pick back up with no miss. However, it is kind of hard to mow with one arm on the wheel and the other arm on the choke! Any suggestions?

Check the easy things like the screens, etc first. I have had this problem a few times and it is usually some rust like particles inside the carb when the engine sits for a long time, like over winter. It is just my feeling, but it seems that the oxygenated gasoline sold in the northeast is hard on the metal parts, especially when left in storage for several months. Either rebuild the carb, or try cheap fix of taking it apart and blow out all passages with aerosol carb cleaner. Good luck.

I had the very same problem with my NAA. I started with the sediment screens, two at the sediment bowl, one at the carb at the end of the fuel line.
If that doesnt work move on to the electrical side complete tune up, wires, coil, points, cap condenser, etc. If necessary check vacumn pressure
After having done all of the above I sent the carb
out for a rebuild; I'm glad I did it was inexpensive and the tractor not only runs smoother
but with much more power.

You might go thru and check the two filters in the sediment bulb and the filter in the elbow where the fuel line goes into the carb. Just rinse them out to get rid of any particles captured by them.

I agree. I would also check the fuel line between the tank and the carb. You could also have a freaky air leak at the manifold or the carb which is magnified when the engine is at full load. Pulling the choke to make a warm engine run like it should is usually the sign of a fuel problem, either not enough or a too much air in the mixture. My $.02 also.

If you know that the plugs, points, condensor and coil are good, several other things to check:
make sure you have adequate fuel to carb, make sure the carb is clean and all jets are functioning(in other words, is the carb clean?)
governor adjustment(check for wear inside), the centrifugal advance mechanism inside the distributor.
