Question: I'm racking through every possible scenario to find out why no spark at the plugs. I have paint on the motor where the distibutor sits. In addition to the gasket, I used silicone gasket maker too. Does the distributor need to be sitting with metal to metal contact on the motor?

9N'er, just by chance have you read the following link for front mount distributors. It's at NSeries.com and is very well explained and has diagrams. There has to be a short somewhere to keep fire from the plugs if you are getting to the points. Meaning the points are shorting out. A good place to look is where the spring of the points attachs to the condenser lead. Sometimes when this screw is tightened it will twist the copper lead and spring to allow one or both of them to touch the base which is a no-no.

Hope this helps!!

If per chance the two mounting bolts are not grounding into your engine you might be missing your best shot at it. Your other two shots are one: through the gasketed base to engine interface or two: the tang and slot connection. No. 1 is not a good shot. No.2 , who knows? Oil , Vibration your guess is as good as mine. HTH, Don
