I have finally located all prts. for rebuilding my 8N#245054. Had a lot of fun putting it together with a gentleman that really knows his stuff! We had the pistons knurled to help on compression. Don't know if this was good or bad but have trusted him for advice. I am putting the motor in the tractor this weekend and was wondering about proper start-up and break in proceedures. Any advice would be welcome and appreciated. I know that we should turn engine over without the plugs in place to make sure it is oiling well. I have replaced rod and main bearings, rings, rebuilt the oil pump, and did a valve job including new valve seats on the exhaust side. Thanks in advance for the advice.I check this board often and believe it is the best info. available anywhere!!! Rick FL. Panhandler

In addition to what Timk said, you don't want to let the engine idle for an extented time during the break-in period; after 2 hours, check for proper cylinder head bolt(or nut) torque after the engine cools; put a light load on it, say with a 5 bush hog on SHORT grass, after 4 hours; change the oil and filter in 6 hours; then slowly put greater loads on it; and vary the rpm's, no more that 80% of highest rpm. You'll see some ring dust in the oil the first time you change it, but that's okay.

I had no trouble with my 9N overhaul and break-in procedure by following these general guidelines.

Rick,
I am in the same boat, getting ready to break in a newly rebuilt engine. I will be watching to see the responses you get. I was wondering about your comment "turn engine over without the plugs in place to make sure it is oiling well". Could you give me some more details on this, what to look for, etc. Thanks for any help!

Your concern is to not run it hard until the rings seat. I'm not sure of the hours involved in this, but if you run the tractor regularly, give it a couple of weeks. You should also run the engine at different speeds during break-in.

If its together already, this suggestion is to late. I worked with an old time ford man who would not put any engine together without coating the bearings with STP. He also would connect an electric drill to the oil pump shaft (when available) and spin it until oil was running every where before he would drop in the distributor and start the engine. In all the years he did this he never had a bearing run dry or an engine fail in the first 25,000 miles. He made a beliver out of me.
