Got an 8N rebuilt block assembly from CT as recommended from this board--but you have purchase a new oil pump assembly-$125.00 and then align bore it to fit. I have a milling machine and lathe and can take to a machine shop, but need advise. Do you remove front main cap, insert new bronze?? bearing and then align bore to what tolerance? Then press on new oil pump gear to drive gear--Can't find info in the service manual.

I think what you are refering to is align boring or line boring the main bearint cap oil pump housing combination to the exesting mains. As all mechanics learn early on there is no such thing as taking a main bearing cap off one engine and putting it on another engine unless the replacement is line bored. It just won't fit the bearings and crankshaft and if you try it you are asking for big trouble.

The oil pump bushing comes undersize so it can be reamed to fit the new pump shaft. The reason bushings have to be reamed is because they are distorted and upset or made thicker when installed a press fit. Some larger bushings don't have to be reamed because the one thousandth on a 3" bushing won't make much difference but the same one thousandth on a 1/2" shaft will make lots of difference. The oil pump bushing is not what they meant by line boring the cap, this means line boring the block to accomidate the new bearing cap for the oil pump so it will fit the block and the crankshaft.
