NAA pops out of 1st gear

Not one NAA, mind you, but *two* recently-rebuilt NAAs have popped out of 1st gear on me in the past week.

Both occurred when I was using engine compression to control my speed as I headed down a steep hill with a 2500 lb, self-propelled baler in tow. After the second occurrence, I eliminated the operator-error factor, checking that the tractor was properly in 1st gear and holding my hand just off the shifter on my next descent. Popped right out!

Any suggestions on what needs to be checked in the transmission? Fixes? (Levelling this New England farm would be nice but it is not an option.)

Thanks.

Something like bearings and or where the gears slide on the shafts are loose. This is always what makes a transmission jump out of gear. If a part will wiggle then it needs to be fixed so it won't wiggle. Forget about the detent mechanism being the problem. They are the first thing people look at as the culprit and the last thing to be the culprit. The detent needs to be working but it will not prevent the transmission from jumping out of gear if other things are moving where they shouldn't be moving.
