8N won't start

I've read many of the recent suggestions given to 9n'er and I've tried to follow them in diagnosing the problem(s) with my 8N. Having little patience, I took my 8N directly to the neighborhood mechanic to have the carb rebuilt and I told him to give it a tune-up while he was working on it. I barely got it home from his shop (he had left to go on vacation so I couldn't return it) due to no power under load and it felt as if it was not firing on all 4 cylinders.

First thing this morning, I got it started and adjusted the carb so that it idled smoothly. Still she had no power and missed badly at high rpms in 3rd and 4th gears. The spark plugs and points are gapped properly. I checked Dell's suggestion about the timing: My measurement was 1/2" instead of the 1/4" in his post and in the manual. So, I adjusted the timing to the 1/4" setting and put everything back together.

Now, I cannot get it started at all and it is flooded. I checked the plugs and found that I am not getting spark, but I do have juice going into the coil. Did I mess up the distributor when I set the timing by the book or is my coil shot? Where do I go from here?

All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Sure sounds like it could be a 2-3 transpose problem as Dell suggested. Remember that as you go thru the firing order 1-2-4-3 you go CCW around the cap. Going CW gives you the 2-3 transpose. FWIW

It's a front mount distributor - original 6 volt system.

I just read the post from 9n'er below. I get a similar reading (6 volts going in; 6 volts at the pigtail) but it reads 4 volts at the front of the coil where it makes connecton with the distributor cap. Are these the type of readings we should be getting? If so, what's going wrong in the distributor that there's no spark at the plugs?

Al..... .oh my oh my.....

"(6 volts going in; 6 volts at the pigtail)" .....This implies to me that you are hanging the coil out in the middle of the air and not grounding the pigtail through the distributor points as it normally is. Thats exactally what I would expect. This tell me your coil primary is not open and should cause sparkies when the ignition points open.

"reads 4 volts at the front of the coil where it makes connecton with the distributor cap"....This implies to me that you have mounted the coil correctly and the points are grounding the coil thru the pigtail internally and the "ballast resistor" is doing its job correctly. (looking for about 3.5 volts at the front mount coil terminal)

Remember, its the opening of the points that causes the sparkies. On the front mount sometimes the 2 part insulation washers around points feed through short out and as far as the coil is concerned, the points never open and you'll never get any sparkies. Something to check.

Your other comment, about a mechanic in a hurry to go on vacation could mean he got the sparkplug wires crossed up on cylinders 2 & 3. That ol' N will run and idle with crossed 2 & 3 but won't give you any power. Firing order FYI is 1,2,4,3 and if he is not used to working on the frontmount N engine, its eazy to cross 'em up.

Hope this gives you some ideas of what to check. Let us know how it works out, we care..... ..Dell
