Coil..Distributor.....Starting Question

I have an 800 Series Ford that was running good and won't start, now.....so here goes:
1.)Solenoid was bad so while waiting for the new part decided to do a tune up.
2.) Put in new plugs, points, condenser.
3.) When putting in the points I broke the little copper "conductor" that runs from the coil ground to the points/condenser. (Remember this is a 1964) Went to Big A, they didn't have a copper conductor but gave me 2" strap to use in its place.
4.) Installed the Solenoid....and engine cranks...but won't start.
5.) Checked plugs.....no fire to any plugs.
6.) Have fire to the Coil.
7.) Checked the high voltage wire that goes from the Coil to the distributor....cooroded. Also, input in Distributor cap cooroded.
8.) Replaced the high voltage wire.
9.) Put on New distributor cap and new rotor.
10.) Still no fire to the plugs.
11.) Went to Auto Zone and bought a Coil.....?
12.) Installed Coil and cranked engine....no fire to plugs....and New Coil gets extremely hot.I mean it will burn you to touch.
13.) Assume this may not be correct Coil???
14.) Rechecked the "Conductor" that runs from the Coil ground to the Condenser/Points and notice that there is a little piece of cardboard which I put between the distributor body and the conductor wire....a bolt goes through the distributor body.....What is the purpose of this Cardboard? Can only "assume" that my problem has something to do with this conductor..... ?
Can anyway tell me what to do next??
Many Thanks. RT

I will bet a dollar against a stale doughnut that your points are permanently shorted to ground. The purpose of the little insulator (Cardboard) is to make shure that the little bolt going through the distributor does not get shorted to ground. It is best if you have an ohm meter to read this connection. When the points are open, you should not get any continuity to ground at the screw...
Happy Motoring

I'm a little mixed up here, so please clarify.
The little bolt that goes through the side of the distributor is connected by a ground wire to the negative side of the coil (on the outside of the distributor)
Question is....where does the little cardboard go...? Where does the connector fit..?
I have bolt, connector, cardboard...then inserted through the wall of the distributor....
On the outside of the distributor the bolt has a nut which holds the connecting wire from the distributor to the negative side of the coil.

I guess I'm asking where am I going wrong?

OK..... I see the diagram.....
I have: bolt, strap, insulating washer (cardboard).

Diagram shows.....on the outside of the distributor....an insulating grommet??

Possibly I dropped this?? Is this rubber? Or what?

God, I'm tired of tearing this down in 115 Heat Index..... :)

RT,

The insulating grommet is supposed to be phenolic. Looks sorta like a combination of plastic and cheesecloth.

On the 800 I used to have, the grommet died of old age. Turned into a "checked everything except" experience and cost $50 to learn my 5 cent thingy wasn't there.

Well my grommet was there also....but worn out....
And now I have spark to the plugs.....but I also have an Arc from the high intensity wire on the coil to the negative wire on the coil....it's jumping down??? Plan to replace the spark plug wires to see if this solves the problem????

Sorry I can't complete the answer right now (mine is 170 miles away) but if I remember right it is just a piece of plastic that slides down in the groove where the bolt goes through, maybe someone else that has one present can help out. Be sure and hold the second nut before trying to tighten the connection, I wasn't thinking when I tightened mine and twisted mine in two and I used brass shim stock for replacement, worked good. Good luck. Stan
