I just noticed today that the black/red neg/pos battery leads on my 12v 8n are reversed.

The tractor seems fine electrically, but I was wondering why they might be like this. It is just a geometry issue? Was the guy who did my 12v conversion just a moron?

Is this something common?

You say the leads are reversed. I beleive that when your tractor was converted to 12 volt, it was changed to negative ground. This is necessary for the altinator to operate properly. If it works, leave it alone.

Rob..... ...some people are just color blind (grin).

Actually, the diodes in 12 volt alternator require negative ground, otherwize very expensive silcon fuses.

The 6 volt N-Tractor was positive ground for some very esoteric reasons. Something called the "Edison Effect". Metalic ions being transfered across the sparkplug gap. Nowdays, its cheeper to replace the sparkplug than to worry about inproving sparkplug life by controlling ion transfer by electricity polarity. ..... Dell

Here are some words on changing from 6 to 12 volts...
This is the perfect time to convert POS ground to NEG ground, for ease and conformity. Three little moves get that done: 1. Simply reverse the wires on the Ammeter. (The previous "In" will now be "Out" and vice-versa). 2. Also reverse the wires on the coil. 3. Finish by reversing the battery cables. POS will now go to the starter, and NEG will go to ground.(These three operations are done with the battery disconnected, of course!)

If everything is working ok maybe your guy did this...geo
