Has there been any records discovered or archived that does provide the vintage Ford production changes by serial number? Here's what prompts the question: I read that the first 700-900 9N's had aluminum hoods and components. But when did the aluminum grill end? and Ford began installing the solid center front grill on 9N's...and then at what date or tractor did the slotted front grill appear? Perhaps, these details may be lost...but I'm curious and confused (as usual). I saw 9N 1430 with a replaced aluminum front grill. I saw 9N 14689 with a cutout grill. My 9N 31649 (the Whimpster) came with a cutout grill (mid 1940), but 9N 46,000? has a solid center grill. Tyler Neff's 9N 15015 has a cutout, but posted photo here for 9N 15730 has aluminum grill. The two books I have (Pripps and the other book by Beecher) do not have that kind of detail...just changes by year. Does Ford have records like this...and are they available for research? just curious. thanks in advance to the history experts. 9N'er

Fords are funny in that changes were often put into place as parts were available. For example the first shipment of new grills may have gone on tractors, then more old onrs were found in the wharehouse so those went on etc... There are supposedly even odd features on the first 100 or so 8Ns that are 2N leftovers. Maybe even engines! Nothing went to waste in a Henry Ford operation.
Good Luck in finding details.

I once had a similar question about production numbers on the 700 series built in '57. I was told (by Dan of the Vintage Ford Tractor Resource fame) that the information was lost/misplaced/intentionally tossed when Ford Tractor division moved from one location to another way back when. I've also heard stories of a fire that destroyed a lot of those kinds of production records, but can't remember any details.

I am with you 9ner, I have a mongral 9. It has a combine engine (side mount, converted to distributor, WICO magneto) No identifying serial number(s)I can locate. The grille is missing. The front hubs are the wide spaced bolt pattern, and the grease fittings are on the back of the spindles. The wishbones are tubular. The throtle is beside the cast aluminum steering column. It has a three spoke steering wheel. The starter button is on the dash, however there is also a nonfunctional one on the transmission cover. The rear wheels are 9 x 32 with rivited hubs, and both brake levers are alike. The hydrolic pump (which was just replaced) was / is a 9N/2N unit. The rear trumpets are smooth. Now after all of this, can anyone tell me what year it might be?

That is the most mongrel 9N I've ever heard anyone explain, or own. In fact, I think it's a 57 9N; ...Heinze 57 that is. Cast aluminum steering housing...that's a good find. I'm stuped on this one. The only thing I can say is: "good luck!" :) and enjoy it... Maybe, this Board should be: 9N, 2N, 8N and Mongrel N's. -9N''er

That 9N needs a photo posted! What a find...interesting to say the least. The only thing it's missing is the John Deere paint scheme!

You asked for it ! I will attempt to grab some shots this week end with the company digital camera (oops I didn't say that) and see about posting them. My 9 is kinda like my old dog not much to look at but very good at what it does.
I'll even try to get the dog in the same shot so you can get the corelation.

Hello, I am a sophmore student and I have the task to write a research paper on Ford Cars....I was wondering if you could send me any primary sources you have or any information you think would be helpful to my study. I am very interested in the car business therefore I would appreciate it greatly if you could help me out and send me any information you can "get your hands on."
Thank you very much and hope to hear from you soon!

FMOCO changes to production were detailed in something called Service Bulletins. These are available for T thru v8 in reprint and contain a wealth of info. The T bulletins had running changes on the Fordson. There were also Service Bulletins for N tractors evidenced by the rear section of the N repair manual reprint sold by FordNH dealers. Those bulletins told about changing the electrical system to a regulator type and explained the new upright dist. I have never seen a bound set of bulletins for the N but am sure somewhere out there a set exists that could be reprinted.
