8n, oil in water, buy or not? (long)

A local implement dealer just got a 1951 8N on trade. Almost a nice tractor -- good tin, tires, oil pressure, lights, hydraulics, and it includes a rare foot accelerator, an underdrive tranny and a belly mower. Asking price is $2,500. But when I checked the radiator, I found oil as deep as I could probe (about 2 inches)! This is not the usual radiator scum film, but black stuff that looks, smells and feels like used engine oil. It disappears when running but comes back instantly when I shut it down. And there's no antifreeze -- just water, which suggests the oil accumulated quickly (because you can't get by with water in a Minnesota winter). Regarding oil in radiator, the archives advise everything from "don't worry" to "cracked block." What's your expert advice -- should I try a lowball offer or run like hell? The tractor has a lot to offer, but then there's that oil. I appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Good price, IMO, for the shape and features. I wouldn't be afraid to buy it.

Mr. Rossow, long time no see !(-:

Well, here's the deal, there's no oil passages in a N head, so I don't think it's oil your see'n, I would guess it's blow by and such that's being pushed by a bad head gasket. If it were true oil in the radiator, you would have to have a cracked block which would put coolant/water into the oil.
What you could do if ya really want this tractor is tell the guy you'll take it if he puts a new head gasket on it and it cures the problem ???

Hope this helps.

later,dave

Oh ya,use my boom all the time, works great!!

When I bought my 2nd 8N, I got it running, and discovered oil in the radiator. It was a bad head gasket. replaced the head gasket and it cured the problem. I was a little worried account the block had been welded, but nothing was wrong on the top side. I would make an offer if it were me, but that's only my opinion. If you buy it and replace the head gasket, be sure and retorque the head after an hour or two of running. Torque the head from the center out to each end. Good luck!!!

I had the same thing with my 9n when I bought it, I drained the cooling system and ran a can of flush through it. I have'nt had it happen since.I would buy it in a heartbeat. Good luck
