Crank shaft journals

I have a 8N ford serial Number *8N322*. per the book this should be .040 sleeve thickness. I have the tractor apart and it appears to be a .090 sleeve thickness. I measured the journal for the connecting rod and it is 2.09. The book says the journals should be 2.248-2.249? I need to replace the pistons/bearings/crankbearings, etc. Even if I order the biggest oversized bearings it is still too small. Any ideas? I will also have to have the valves done by our local machine shop. It looks as though the block was bored out once before.

The rod journals are supposed to be 2.094. Yours has probably never been reground if you measure 2.09. The main bearing journals are 2.248-9.

The block has been bored for the thick .090 sleeves apparently. That is good!

I think what you have with the crankshaft is a crank that has been turned past the standard replacement size bearing because of a really badly damaged crankshaft. If you have a knowlegable machinest who wants to help you instead of rob you he can order bearings from stock that has to be cut before shipment. It used to be a common occurance in shops to do this to save an other wise shot crankshaft but is not done much today. They had rather sell you a crankshaft. You can buy a crankshaft kit with the bearings already in it to fit the shaft. I don't know if the parts place would give you credit for your old one though since it is past a regrind. I would ask the machinest about a set of special cut bearings and see if he even knows what you are talking about. Lots of things these younger men just don't want to hear about or learn because they can make more money quicker the other way.
