No Sleeves in Cylinders

This has puzzled me for a couple of months. Rebuilt my 9N over the winter. Took block to NH dealer for hot tanking, valve work and sleeve installation. He showed me I had no sleeves in the cylinders. Decision time? I had them bore the block and install thicker sleeves so I could use standard size pistons. The pistons that came out of it are considerably larger ( don't remember exact diameter with out measuring again }. Is it a common practice on N's to remove sleeves and run oversize pistons directly on the cylinder walls. Thanks for quelling my curiosity.

Best Regards!!!!! !

Went to the parts house today and talked to the best parts man in the whole world. He dug out his old flat head Ford book and the N pistons are the same size as the N pistons in all the 100 HP Ford flat head engines. He ordered me .080 pistons and rings to be here on Monday. Working on the hood and fenders while waiting for the engine parts. Got the do something to the front spindle bushing too. Talk about floppy!!!!!

You could buy pistons .0825 oversize to fit Ford tractor block without sleeves 40 years ago. My 1961 Tractor Supply Co. catalog says, "We definitely recommend sleeve use, but...we offer ...standard or Turbo Head types." You could buy 4 aluminum pistons, pins fitted and supplied with rings for (hold onto your chair) $11.50 plus shipping. Yes, that's the price for four pistons.

Farmers in our neighborhood preferred to buy the piston and sleeve sets that cost $21.95 or high-compression for $25.95 back in 1961. Complete overhaul sets with everything from rod bearings to spark plus cost $43.70-- or $47.70 if you opted for high-compression pistons. Mike-Iowa

The way your engine was done is a way I wouldn't reccomend but I suppose it is OK to do it because after all it gives the engine one more overhaul before it has to be bored for the .090 sleeves to take it back to standard again. It is just a cheap way to have a good clean bore without the expense. If the oversize pistons had been run too long and too much wear was allowed to accumulate on the bore without the sleeves it could have ruined the engine though. If it had worn past the size that would leave enough stock to bore for the .090 sleeves then you would have been is deep stuff.

Fifty-some years ago Ford cars and trucks had flat head engines. Mercury pistons were a perfect fit in a 9n block after the sleeves were removed. A cheap overhaul and gave it lots more power.
