In the process of fitting the hood to the lower side panels and front grill. Caught myself saying this out loud at 0600: "man, just for once I wish something would go easy on this tractor..." And here I thought it would be a snap, just bolt the lower panels to the grill, then bolt this assembly to the hood. NO! that is not the case. Nothing lines up well, fits good, or seems to be a ntaural fit; there are 1/4-3/8" gaps between the lower hood panels and the grill, and then this assembly has a twist...so it's hard to line up the three pegs of the grill on to the top hood. But it's clamped together...and now I need to problem solve the correct spacing and fitting to the top hood. That's phase one. Phase two is then fitting and bolting this asembly (it's done) on to the tractor. Oh, that will be a snap...10 minutes at the most! Anyone have any advice? 9N'er

9Ner, Get you a bigger hammer!! GRIN!! Good luck, and I know you can do it. Look at all you have been through already and it's behind you. I know as soon as you finish this one, you'll go out and restore another one. It just gets in your blood. Another set of hands is most helpfull. Just go easy and when it isn't going right, back off and retry later. I know you have done that before and said it works. Keep the chin up!!

Hi Dave. Several times since I started this project..I've found myself having to list all of the next steps in order to help me see straight. I'm at that point again. I'll be kind-of-sort of ready to take a break from this when it's completed...and just enjoy it. As much as I enjoy this process it requires a lot of thought, thinking through small steps, anticipating problems and learning a great deal. I'm getting close. On the personal side, the timing of this is key. We are planning to build in a year or so. I will do most of that work...including the landscaping etc. That will be the "job" for the rest of my life; and I made a decision about this 9N...it's now or never...or wait and make the time in 6-12 years. But with a growing family, one on the way, a full time job...my experiences say:...priorities change. I see this as my window of opportunity before I fire up the compressor to drive nails, and you know the rest. I have been pushing this to a small degree to get it done...and do it now, and move on with the house jobs and honeydew list. Life will be happier for Mrs 9N and then for me. What a job this has been Dave. All of it a great thing to do...but a growing job at that; it's quite an accomplishment to restore something like this. Thank you for your assistance and advice along the way...I appreciate it very much. 9N'er

Not sure I'm fully understanding you. But, assuming my 8N was in pieces (sheetmetal wise), and I was having a hard time making it all go together right, I'd probably try attacking it this way.

Remove gas tank from hood

Remove radiator from tractor

Losely install sides onto hood, no grill

Set hood on tractor, rear set correctly, lying on engine.

Install bolt on each side of lower side to tractor to hold up front of hood. Do not tighten.

Install rear hood bolts, do not tighten.

Wiggle & jiggle sides under hood until alignment seems right. Tighten bolts attaching sides to hood.

Remove hood assembly (hood & two sides)

Install radiator.

Reinstall hood assembly and check for overall alignment. Adjust and cuss if necessary.

Remove hood assembly.

Install gas tank

Reinstall hood assembly.

Tighten bolts to lock it all down.

Loosen lower bolts of sides that attach to tractor.

Install grill

Re-tighten side mount bolts.

To my thinking, this should work and result in the least frustration, tears, blood, and flying wrenches.

Nolan: I took your advice tonight, and spent some time loosely fititng the hood, side pieces and grill with loose bolts. Seemed to work just fine. I made new interior mounting brackets for the side hood pieces...so I'm trying to mark the hole locations while everything is in place and lined up. To say it requires patience is an understatment, but I made progress, and everything is loosely bolted and in place... thanks for this run down on the process and steps. It was a huge help. 9N'er

Yes, been contemplating that and good point!...I removed the radiator and drained it tonight. But I may re-install it, and ensure the correct height of the hood. Problem is this...on this tractor the lower panels were mangled...and holes were drilled through them with some sort of 90 degree brackets installed on the tracotr to catch the through bolts (not typical to a 9N). So, I had to made lower brackets and had them welded to the interior of the lower panels...as best as I can...but they are more than likely not exact...thus I need to set the height of the hood, locate the holes on the lower hood side panel brackets and drill them. A lot of head scratching and thinking it through. Fun...but time consuming. thanks.

You beat me to my next post which was: "what is the best order of attaching sheet metal"? I've already dented and scratched the sides and front grill. I'll print this and give it a shot over the next several days. I'm thinking of holding off on final topcoating these pieces until it is all installed (including re-attaching the radiator), and then spray it after installation is complete. I'll bag/mask the radiator prior to that. It looks like once it is finally installed and tightened down, it is filling the dents sanding, priming and smoothing once again. Oh man Nolan, I'm getting near the end, but the challenges continue to challenge me...they don't let up! Good suggestions and advice (glad to hear I'm not the only one that has cussed somewhat the sheet metal aspect of this). 9N'er
