I need to fabicate a temporary fuel tank for my tractor. The question is---will PVC pipe hold up to gas? I will be using a couple of pieces of 6 inch pipe with caps and plumb together to hold more fuel. Is this a good idea.

Thanks ahead for your thoughts.

PVC, a thermoplastic compound formed by polymerization or copolymerization of vinyl or vinyldene halides and vinyl esters is recommended for unleaded gasoline use up to 140F. This is for type 1, grade 1 only.
Note CPVC is not recommended.

I would not use plastic of any type due to the possibility of a static electric charge being built up. Proper grounding is needed and you may not get it if jury-rigged. I guess I do not know enough about it to feel comfortable.

Sounds like a ticking time bomb to me! I went to a lawnmower shop and got a tank off an old mower for free, while there I bought fuel hose and a quick shutoff valve as well as the needed fittings for less than $5. Bracket on tank was modified to bolt to the steering column so I can test run my tractor without its tank installed.
