I am having a hard time getting the old 8n going.
I sure need your help. After rebuilding the engine and getting it back in the tractor, it started right up and started surging and then would backfire. It has been converted to 12 volts, and I can't find a ballast resistor. Would the lack of a resistor to reduce the voltage be the culprit? I am putting new plug wires on it tomorrow, the old ones are cracked, brittle, and taped up. Thanks for all your help.

Assuming that you have a front mounted distributar and it is 12 volts you should have two resistors. The original one or it's equivilent and another one so that the voltage is reduce to the coil to about 3 volts when the points are closed.
If this is the case don't try to run it or you will surely fry the old front mount coil.

The old 55 56 etc Ford ballast resistor will do for the second in series resistor.
