Sir, The recent post about the N with missing sleeves brings up my question. I have been told many of the N combine engines produced did not have/use sleeves. None of the "tellers" said if these engines were standard blocks minus sleeves or if they were in fact a "different" block. Do you know, if in fact the combine N engines were the same block (possibly without sleeves)? My mongral 9 has a combine engine, and is in need of a major. I am in hopes it has sleeves, but if not I am trying to get a handle on the cost to bore and install them. (It might be cheaper/better to do a long block, but I wonder if there would be a core penality)
Thanks for all your great input to the board.

I wish I was knowedgable about the combine engine but unfortunately am not. Fact is I didn't know that Ford even built a combine back in those days of the N tractor.

I would be surprised if the engine you have does not have sleeves. It may have the .040 sleeves if it hasn't been bored out for the .090 and could even still have the original steel sleeves. The cast iron sleeves didn't come in the N engine untill after 48 or 49 I don't think. Don't quote me on that one because I am not sure but as I remember all the original engines that I ever rebuilt had steel sleeves.
I think that in about 50 or 51 Ford started using .090 cast iron sleeves in all the N engines.

If there is enough block left, you can have it bored for universal sleeves and have them bored to fit your pistons. Any competent automotive machine shop should be able to advise you on this process.
