I cut grass with a 59" Wood mower and I have an adapter to make the small shaft big enough to turn the blades. My question is, does Ford have a big pto shaft that fits an 8N tractor? Will one off a hundred series work?

Be sure you get a new PTO cover when you change the shaft if it doesn't come with one. The new shafts are a bit longer and the old covers will not fit. I got mine at the New Holland dealer for $7.50. Cheap insurance!

I did just what you're thinking about on my 850. While a 100 series pto won't fit in an 8N, the dealer (or other suppliers) can get you a brand spanking new pto assembly that just bolts in. I recommend using this as an opportunity to change the fluid unless that's been done in the recent past. Otherwise drop the front wheels in a ditch as previously suggested. The old shaft unbolts with those 4 bolts you see around the shaft flange. Pull the old one out, put the new one in, replace the bolts and you're done. Worth doing.

Robbie..... ..yep, they sure do make a new ASAE spec 1 3/8 PTO shaft specially for N-Tractors. 100 series won't fit (too long). About $100 including new PTO bearing. Check with some of the N-Board fine sponsors on the left sideboard. What a nice way to say "thank you".

Tip: park your tractor with nose downhill in a ditch or sumptn', all the hydraulic tranny fluid rushes to the nose and you won't have to drain 5 gallons of tranny fluid to replace the PTO shaft. Reports that it can be done in 15 minutes or so.

But then on the other hand, it just might be an opportune time to replace your 5 gallons of hydraulic tranny fluid with Ford/New Holland recommended M2C-134D hydraulic/tranny fluid. Of course, you can still use the 60 yr old recommendation of 90wt EP mineral gear oil, if you can find it. I use the M2C-134D and have no problems with it..... ..Dell

Dell we are at the end of the tractor that you are notorious for. I you don't say something about the ORC here I'm sending the ambulance to pick you up because you're not feeling well!!!!

Yeah, I thought that was a little odd too.

The 100 series are different and won't work.

Robbie,

Yes, There is a larger shaft available. The 8N was built with the 1 1/8" shaft, and conversion kits are available to upgrade. The upgrade size is 1 3/8". I asked the dealer about one today and the price was $117.00. This was a complete kit....shaft, bearings, seals, and gaskets.

I do not know if one off the hundred series will fit.
