I was reading your recent post about casting #'s and thought I would check mine for the heck of it. The block has "A18522" which if not for the two twos on the end would indicate January 18, 1945. What do you think?

I'm not answering any more date code questions. I just looked at a '48 8N (sn 8N57305) that had codes on the axles I'd never seen before...something like 8-13D (??!) It's enough to let me know I'm no expert. According to the serial number charts I've looked at this tractor should have been built in the first half of '48. So does this axle code mean April (D) 13, 1948? The hydraulic cover had a date of 7-1-47 which would make it one of the first hydraulic covers cast. Why would it take 9 months for this cover to make onto a tractor? It's too much for my poor little brain to handle. I like my '55 850 where all the date codes I've found so far make sense. Axles check out to July '55, radiator and carb are dated June '55; all very tidy for a mid '55 serial number. These N codes are all over the map.

Did'nt mean to make you scratch your head. Maybe the mystery of the N casting codes will never be solved. With all the swapping of parts over the years I guess they don't mean much anyway except to help you confirm what you already suspect. Of course they are no help if you can't decipher them.

Yep. Codes leave you scratching sometimes. Who would ever be able to know for sure if it came on the thing or was put on it later. I have read that parts from early in the year we're pulled and put on late. No help I know. See ya.
