My next door Neighbor had this old 8n sitting out next to his barn along side his 600. I thought he had bought a parts tractor, because it was covered up. It sat there for 2 yrs. I finally asked him about it and he said that he couldn't get it started. He also said he just didn't have the time to mess with it anymore, so he let me take it off his hands for a great price (< $1000) Anyway, to shorten the story, I had to replace the Breaker plate in the distibutor, and replace the bushings (distributor was sloppy and the breaker plate was shorted.) I also rewired it to run on 12v, but dropped the coil V+ to 6 so that I could use the old coil. I cranked her up and she purrs like a kitten, but when I idle it up or ride around, it smokes a lot. I think the rings may be worn. Any Advice? Also the tractor has 2 different size tires on the rear. Someone told me one of the tires was a (swamp tread tire) Never seen one like it, but then again I don't know much about these ol' things. The hub seal on the smaller tire side is leaking. Are these Hub seals hard to replace? Would appreciate any info.

I bought a 9 recently that had not been run for a number of years, but had been started often. When I first started using it, the smoke kept the skeeters away. I put a can of Zanes recommended "Marvel Mystery Oil" in the crankcase, and half a can in a full tank of gas. Yesterday I drove it 6 miles (back from a buddys place where I did some grading) and before I got home it had stopped smoking out the tail pipe completely. It would still puff a little from the oil breather on a hard long pull up a steep grade in 3rd (about 1/3 throttle) but not much. Try it I did cause Zane said if anything would loosen it up Marvel Mystery Oil would. As usual he was right. (I do not work for Zane or Marvel)

Funny, I picked up a can of the Marvel Mystery oil yesterday. I spoke with the mechanic about it, and he swears by it too. Had a lot of good things to say, and strongly suggested I put a can of it in the crankcase too. I'll give it a shot, and I suspect, after reading this string, that it may help my compression too (maybe). I don't have any smoke though.

I have to testify for the Marvel Mystery as well. The 47 8n had not run for years. The seller said it didn't have enough power, needed rebuilt. Oil pressure was bad. Well I must have changed that crankcase oil/Mystery three or four times. Ran Mystery in the tank too. Oil pressure is always at least 20 now and I cut grass in 3rd gear. Convinced! daz (Oh)

I had a similar expieriance two years ago. My neighbor had a 51 8N he wanted me to restore for him, it had sat for 15 years in a pasture and had no usable sheet metal of any kind. He said it had been rebuilt a year before parking. I kept putting him off as no way was it what I would normally choose to work on. He persisted and the only way I could think of think of to close the issue was to buy it. I saw them coming down the road one Sunday with the tractor in tow behind a pickup going about 5MPH, even at that speed it was hopping off the ground because of the out of round front tires! What have I done! Well to make a long story short I swapped carb, dist, coil from my working 51, installed a new wiring harness and cranked it. It wanted to start so I got my Dear Wife to pull it with my truck, surprise, surprise it started easily. Now its running and I'm driving it around an island of trees in the back yard and after about three rounds smoke has filled the area as high as the 75' pines, what next, parked it. Next day take it for a spin down the road noticed smoke was not too bad, compression test 62-78#. Decided to play with it for a few days before tear down. After a few days of running a few minutes each the smoke is gone, compression test over 100# all cylinders. Owner had oiled the cylinders well when parked. I am going to use this tractor for grass cutting as it is good enough, found sheet metal and NOS front wheels and tires so it will look good.

It is not hard to change axle seals, get an FO4 manual if you need it and check the archives.
