I'm hesitant to post this message here, but I'm running out of places to go. I've been checking on this board for about two years now, and know that it contains a broad spectrum of eclectic, knowledgeable people. Besides that, people actually answer posts made! Well, enough knob polishing.

Believe me when I say it--my 2N is the apple of my eye, and my preferred tractor, but--I have this red-headed stepchild of an Allis Chalmers C, which I use with a belly mower for mowing 10 acres. It's an O.K. tractor (notice, I didn't praise it TOO much!), but one glaring fault it has is its steering. The sector box (it's a narrow front end) has SO much play in it that it wanders like an inebriated serpent. I've adjusted the screws on the sector box itself--no luck. It's either loose-as-a-goose or it binds one way or the other. As far as I know, there are no NOS or rebuilt units available. Yes, I've tried to post on the A-C board--no luck. I've even consulted (gasp!) another tractor site's guru (!?), who didn't even bother to post me back. So, come on--I know that there are guys on this very board who also own (and have knowledge of) the blasphemous orange tractors. Please help! I don't want to spend another thousand on it (it was only $750 to begin with). Thanks again.

Ron

I think Rod's answer is a good one...that will let you figure it out. Do you have a manual? th IT one is pretty ggod for those little Allis's.

As for brand loyalty, I grew up Orange. I still want to buy a CA some day. I love the sound of those engines. They have a real "snappy" sound that to me is music to my ears. Also a CA has live PTO (A design that always seemed to me a simple solution that could have been worked into a ford).

But I needed to get some work done, and that's where the comparison ends. If you have all ald original implements for your AC, they are good, but going down to the implement store and buying new stuff is one advantage I'll never give up.

If I get a CA, I'll probably just ride it around to hear it.

Well I don't have a N or an AC but do have a TEA 20 Ferguson and had a JD A with sloppy steering. I found that the bushings inside the steering front housing were shot you have to jack it up in the front end and try to move the steering with no weight on it. I could grab the linkage and move it a lot with the weight off the front end. Try that I think you will soon find the problem. regards

Ron,

I too have been reading this board for two-plus years. It has been my observation that the guys that post here are a VERY agreeable bunch. AS long as you do not denigrate the Ford N-Series tractors. If you do, "WATCH OUT!!" some guys get real testy, but just when provoked. :-)

Most of us like "old iron", but also like the N because it can still be used with new implements if you need to buy a implement for a particular job. My Dad worked at the JICase works in Rock Island on the VA series tractors. Sometimes think it might be fun to have a VA just for that reason. But have my hands full with the Fords I have.

There was an AC plant in Cedar Rapids, IA. where I went to high school. Don't remember what they made there and was sad to see that plant closed. Hope you get your AC fixed.

Regards,
Larry

The few times I've posted "wanted" adds in the classified section of this web host, I've had my mail box filled up quickly with offers, and even had my phone ringing. So, have you posted a wanted add over there to see what happens?

In September there is a tractor show around here put on the the Allis Chalmers tractor club, with quite a few vendors. If you can wait that long, I'll see what I find there.

Also, these are tractors, not automobiles. I'd suspect one could do a surprisingly adequate job of shoring things up with the carefull use of washers and such. Ok, so it wouldn't be safe at 70 mph, but so what?

I have a buddy that is an AC nut, I can ask him but won't be able to respond until tomorrow.
