Tonight I reinstalled the head. In addition, I hooked up the gauges, the electrical, the starter switch, plugs, harnesses, manifold, air filter pipe, carb, coil, cap, plug wires, plugs (ya know....I've done these steps at least 5 times now...so I am getting that much faster at it...and no guesswork now too)...and get this: I installed the freshly painted hood with that big toothed, fat necked wood borer thing sticking out of the clearcoat. But this is what I want to share: I took a step back, looked at the tractor, it's all one color now...shiny Ford grey. Yep the tires and rims are off, the steering wheel is leaning against the house, the light switch is dangling from the dash...but on blocks it looks great. I took a step back, and for the first time I saw a new 60 year-old tractor. I began to see that it's finally coming together...all of it at the same time. I am a creative person...meaning that I like to do things with my hands...sometimes I feel that's my gift and talent. In spite of my paper pushing, politically sensitve, burocratic forestry job; it's the off-hours and building things that give me a strong sense of accomplishment. Tonight, I just stared at the Whimpster. That's it, just stared at it, looked at it, and it felt pretty darn good. I'm getting there Ellwood...it may be Friday, when I take it for a spin. -9N'er

Just let us all know when the book comes out. You know, typing is something you can do with you hands too. Just gather up all your posts and responses and get to work writing. Maybe you could call it something like "The Wimpster Revival" or "The Tractor Resuscitation" or something else. You'll have to have a public signing for all us N-thusiasts to attend.

Take care, best of luck to you.

Oh, almost forgot! thanks for the reminder. I'll put the chain on after I put the plastic ribbons on at the handle bar ends. I may go all out, and get a clothes pin, a playing card, and pin the card to the front spokes for sound effects. That should get the neighbors attention. whatcha think?! 9n'er

9Ner, Are you seeing the light at the end of that long tunnel now?? Looks mitey good doesn't it. I knew you would get it done, but it just takes time and the drive to finish it when things go wrong. Can't wait to see the New 1940 9N!!!

Dave: I'm feeling it...you're right. It's funny, this has been a long haul...short in the big picture, but a long haul in patience, learning, thinking, problem solving, and fun. Yep, I'm actually beginning to clean up things now and organizing the parts, boxes, tools for the next project. I am wicked pleased with it. I look at it, and I see an almost professional looking job. I can't believe that I could do this...and now see it almost near completion (for this year). Phase two items are: Renovating those 8-32 rear rims and discs, and aquiring the tires; locating an original set of unsealed front lights; locating a 6V system, and tweaking some of the minor things...like finding an original light switch, key switch, etc. But for this first year, what a big step it was. thanks for your help. 9n'er

You have done so much in such a short time. Seems to take me forever to make headway. Mine is a rainy day project, and we have not had much rain here in Georgia. But at the same time you have inspired me. Can't wait to see the pics. March 17, 2001 for me is what Fourth of July was for you. I'm gonna do it. Thanks 9n'er!

March 17, 2001...is there significance to that date? That seems like a reasonable amount of time. I think I started this project in early April. It just sort of grew from a brush-over clean up to a partial restoration. I like the route I took. If i had lot' of money I would have had the engine rebuilt completley and thoroughly, but that's not a biggy at this time. I did what I could for my skill level and tools I had. All gaskets and seals, easy to get bushings and bearings, etc. were replaced. The only seal I did not replace were the two main seals that required the tractor to be split, and the oil pan seal (it works fine). I'll be monitoring your progress reports on this forum and wishing I was there getting my hands dirty. There were a couple times when I needed someone who was "into" this stuff to just show me. But fortunately, this Board proved to be my parachute and paved the way for a soft landing many times over. 9n'er

Yes, March 17 is St. Patricks Day and just about everything here in Savannah shuts down for the parade, claim is it is second only to the one in Boston. The last couple of years there have been several newer green and yellow tractors in the parade and I felt an old Ford should be in the parade also. So I opened my mouth and even told the youth group at my church they needed to build a float so I better be done by then.
As for progress, I started out with the intention of just fixing the lift and painting it pretty. Then I found this board(it has been my parachute too)and decided to do a proper restoration and preserve this bit of Americanna. "Old George" the tractor is pretty much complete except for the tool box and radiator cap. At one time it had a Dearborn side mount mower but all that is left is the left side mounting bracket. Course I know that thanks to the help of Tyler Neff and some other fine members of this board. George is a little unique also in the fact that he has spent his entire "life" on this particular piece of property here on the south Georgia coast. Rumor has it that Ford people once tried to buy the tractor for the Henry Ford museum. Don't know about the rumors, but fact is Henry himself spent alot of time here. His estate still stands in what is now Richmond Hill where he had some sort of ag development and testing facility and did much for the community.
Anyway, I started with the lift where I found a bent plunger. Called Don B. for a replacement and after a pleasant conversation with the gentelman I realized I had alot more work ahead of me than I originally thought. It has been slow going as I am doing most of the work myself. The last several months I've spent splitting, taking apart, measuring, checking, cleaning, etc. Along the way I am maiking a list of needed parts, Don does not know this yet, and would like to drive up and pick up the needed parts. I was so impressed with Don's way of doing business that I would like to meet him. Promise I will check before I go. Right now I am trying to decide if I should bore the block and replace the thin steel sleeves with the thick cast iron sleeves. Seems to be the best way according to Dr. Zane and other experts on this board as far as ring seating and durability. Just today I finally found a machine shop I would trust with the job and saved myself a couple hundred bucks on a water pump for the 1510(see post below). This is more than I usually write, but thanks again 9N'er for the inspiration.

That's great, but I betcha had to wipe tears of joy from your eyes to get a clear view. I know because I almost wiped a few myself.
You'll be there soon, keep at it.
Waiting anxiously !!!

the tears will come when I think of my dog Whimpy that passed-on a couple weeks ago. Somehow, equating her name with the tractor and more importanly the work and drive required still has a somewhat melancholy feel to it. I'm happy with the results and I'm glad I feel that way. I cannot think of anything that I glossed over or took a short cut on to speed things up. The most recent was lifting the head two days ago...didn't plan on that, but glad I did it. It's nice to have confidence in those things that are new on it. thanks for you note! 9N'er
