Thanks to Jess for the information about Photo Point, I'll try to post a picture here, and we'll see if it works.

I ordered a hood emblem for my 8N from one of the big mail-order parts suppliers, and when it came I was disappointed in it. It's a crude aluminum casting with holes in the metal and three posts on the back with no threads to secure it to the hood. Worst of all, it was painted backwards - with the "Ford" in red on an unpainted background instead of the other way around.

So, today I primed and painted it - then I used a Dremel tool with wire brush to buff the raised letters and rim. Then I drilled small holes through all three posts in back. I figure I can secure it to the hood by putting washers on the posts, then running wire through the holes in the posts. There's no way this metal would have held threads, I don't trust "clips" on something this hard to get to, and my grandpa used to say "war" would fix anything!

I think the emblem came out OK - it looks a lot better than it did, anyway.

I bought one of those cheap aluminum versions too, though it wasn't painted. It was similar to the original, but not near the quality. I later bought one of the $30 chromed style emblems, which looked almost identical like the original. Well worth the money.

As far as mounting, may dad simply took a die and put threads on the posts, then used a hex nut to bolt it on. You can also use a lock washer or Locktite. You won't have a problem with it falling off again, especially with the Locktite.

I thought the same thing...but neglected to use a wire or pin of some sort. But, I did use construction silicone adhesive on it as well. I used it on the back side of the emblem and with the push on nut thing that sems like it will last for an hour then get lost in the grass.

The posts are designed to have "speed nuts," the little spring metal things, pushed on to hold the emblem into place.

bg - Yes, I know - but in my experience these grilles are a bear to get off and on even after you remove the bumper, and there's no other way to reach the back of that emblem once the hood's on the tractor. A lot of trouble, maybe, for a couple of slip nuts that decided to slip.

I'm just being picky, but I feel better with a hole drilled in the posts and a wire or cotter key through them. I bet that'll never shake loose. Thanks, - Sam

Above is the "chrome" emblem purchased over a year ago from Palmer Fossum. Just slipped the clips on and it has worked fine. Looks great as the only chrome on my trusty '48. FWIW

That's purty - a lot better-looking than the pitted aluminum one they sent me! I honestly don't remember where I got this one from, but it'll do until I find a better one. Maybe I'll come across an original emblem some day.

Really, I'm not saying there's anything wrong with speed nuts! My caution in drilling this thing is because of the poor quality of the casting and the shape of the posts. There are lots of big pits in the posts, and they taper to a point. I just think speed nuts are likely not to hold on THIS emblem - on one that's better made or with straight posts, they should be fine.
