Original 8N Grille?

Can you tell me if this grille is original for my tractor? I have two 1952 side-distributor 8N's. My mowing tractor has a grille that is obviously after-market, the vertical rods are round wire and some clips spanning several wires are the only ornaments in the center.

This grille is off the other tractor, the one I had rebuilt and am now doing the sheet metal work on. I have tried to put the best of everything on this tractor, and I'm hoping this is an original grille. The vertical rods are oval in cross-section. Obviously, someone started it with a hand crank in the hole, so I have to fix that (I hope they didn't break an arm). Also, the three holes drilled at the top for an emblem don't belong there, so I will patch them.

What do you think? Is this the grille it came with? Thanks, - Sam

NOTE!!

Early 1947 8N's HAVE the holes for the Ferguson emblem in their grills - AS ORIGINAL!

Ford continued to use the old grill dies for some time after the switch over in mid 1947 to the 8N. This was one thing that was a minor thing in the change from the 2N to the 8N. Not "worring" about retooling for the grill, helped get the 8N "off and running" quicker, without effecting the overall model changes that made the 8N different.

FWIW

That is as D.R. said, a 9n-2n grill. Most likely a 2n if the hand crank was used. Some 2n war year models were hand crank only. You may be able to trade that grill tonight if you want for 8n grill. If you look close you will see that the 8n grill has two clips at the top. one on each side. Those holes at the top center are for the "Ferguson system" emblem. DON'T. I repeat. Don,t fill those holes. Get the top dollar that I know you will get for that one, then buy what you need. Remember. Don,t mess up that grill. If 9N'er finds out he will be a plane tonight.

I wouldn't pay too much attention to the worn front hole for identification-9N vs. 2N, a number of tractors out there have this wear mark from front mounted hydraulic pumps, including my 8n.

Good point about the front mounted pump. It didn't even occur to me. His did seem to have the 9n pins though. Thanks

I agree. I just thought it should be noted that it could be a 9N grill as well as a 2N. I didn't mean to imply it was a 8n with my post. It's just that I knew other things can make a wear mark like that.

you're right about that. Blasphemy...that's all I can say...blasphemy...for ever filling Ferguson holes on a 9N/2N grill. This was a good post...I did not know there was a difference in grill types for the 8n. Those clips certainly seem handier and more convenient than the three pins on the 9N/2N grills. Aw heck, now I need to get an 8N...(now, where did I put that sandblaster unit that I'm hiding from the wife? If she ever finds out that I have a super delux sandblaster...I would hate to think what would be sandblasted next...I can guarantee that it won't be a tractor...I suspect old 9N'er will be!)

O.K. - that was close! I was going to use the neighbor's welder and fill those holes in the morning - but based on the information here, I'll hold off.

I need a nice 8N grille for my tractor, but it wouldn't be right to ruin this 2N grille if someone can use it. This one's in good shape, not a ding in it except for the stretched-out crank hole I mentioned, and that will be easy to patch.

So, if anyone wants to trade, let me know. I don't need to make any money on this deal, just a good 8N grille, primed and ready to paint, or sandblasted like this one is. Or - let me know where I can buy one and send the $$$. I'm easy.

Above is a the new grille I bought locally this spring for my '48. Very close to yours but without the holes for the 'Ferguson System' badge.

That sure is a lot nicer than the aftermarket grilles I have come across.Where did you get it from and what price range do they run?

You're right, Elwood, it was a pretty nice knock-off grille. They are being made somewhere in St. Paul, MN for a little outfit north of here called Forest Lake Tractor at 651-464-4628. The price in April was $160 plus shipping. HTH.

Sam, Thats a grill of a 9 or 2 N. The three holes are for the Ferguson System badge. Also the clips at the top of the grill are not the same as the 8N. Dave.
