Have I hurt my baby jumping 6v with 12v battery?

Stupid me thought my '48 8n was converted to a 12V system. I now know it is 6v. I have been jump starting with my pickup. I have been jumping from the battery, oops - I have just read through this forum about jumping it directly to the starter terminal after the solinoid. The question is, have I done damage? Besides being lucky that I haven't blow'ed up the battery, what should I replace? I was planning on getting a new coil and dist. cap. It still runs OK. Did I get lucky again? PS. This forum has been very helpful... Thanks Guys (and any gals out there)

Thanks, Guys. Such a complete and quick response!

I meter 7v across the battery terminals when running. Generator is good and does charge battery. Yes, positive to ground and always hooked correctly. I don't always have to jump, just when having problems starting, (thanks to you folks, discovered the wrong plugs were in there) then I sometimes drained the battery and had to jump. I have replaced the battery cables, and still need to replace some of the other wiring. I will have to check the specific gravity on the battery, but I bet a new one would take care of the jumping/full charge problem. I won't replace coil nor cap until needed. Thanks again.

I don't know if the electrical is similiar to my 9n but I have found that on my 9n some things just seem to need replacing very often to keep my tractor starting on the first couple of turns. My spark plugs seem to need replaced about three times a year. It gets to the point where it will not start when cold and I'll put in new plugs and it will start second turn. As mentioned in this board many times when tractor starts fine cold but will not start hot it is almost always the coil. Leaving the key on frys the coil everytime(i know because i've done it several times). I have to buy a new battery every year. It just gets weak and will not start it especially in the winter. Maybe there is something else wrong with my tractor that makes it do this but I have had it for ten years and it has always been like this. I do run it alot. In the summer between me and my dad it probably gets run an average of 30 hours a week. (30 acres of feild we keep mowed down. Way to much!!) Good luck with your tractor!

Why don't you buy some sheep to keep your 30 acres? It is possable that the voltage regulator is over charging the battery and cooking it. If you are running it 30 hrs week it is normal that you would use 3 sets of sparkplugs. It could be points and condenser, in addition to the voltage regulator.

I don't think you have done any damage as long as it still runs ok. I know I have jumped mine with a 12v several times in the past cause I had no other choice, but finally broke down and bought a new battery. Have your battery checked, and replaced if necessary, then make sure all cnnections are clean and tight, and all wiring is in good order. Good luck with your tractor.

Bob..... ....no, you probably did no lasting harm by jumping your 12 volt battery directly to the 6 volt battery. Assuming you got your polaritys correct (plus to plus). Howsomever, you really need to investigate why you have to continually jump start your "baby" and fix it. Batterys don't live forever and it may just be as simple as replacing yours. Between the lines, because you indicate that your "baby" runs ok after you get it started, implies that your generator still outputs 6 volts ok. Battery plates get sulfered up and just won't supply the amps needed to turn the starter but your generator will supply the needed amps to keep the ignition running. You don't indicate why, you may not need a new ignition coil and dist cap, but you can replace 'em if you want to. But I'd bite the bullet and get a new 6 volt battery and make certain you install it "positive ground"..... ..Dell

What? Positive ground? Am I missing something? I have 12 volt. Don't know much of the 6 volt.

Dale..... ...Jim is correct, 12 volt alternator systems require negative ground, has to do with the alternator diodes, turn into very expensive fuses with positive ground. I specified that original 6 volt system is positive ground for various exotic and theoritical reasons. This has been discussed many times, you can check the "archives" if you really want to get confused. Trust me OEM 6 volt is positive ground. 12 volt alternator conversion is negative ground..... ..Dell

If you've a 12v system you probably have an alternator that *requires* negative ground. If you had the OEM 6v system, it was and probably should be kept as positive ground.

Never connect a 12 volt battery directly to a 6 volt battery. This could have unpleaseant consequences as you surmised. Going to the starter solenoid is the way to do it. Of course it is the side where the solenoid connects to the starter. Polarity is of no consequence since the starter will turn over in the correct direction regardless of polartiy. This is because the pole shoes are electro magnets and the field polarity would also be reversed causing the starter to turn in the correct direction. If the tractor runs ok, you probably did not cause any harm. Always remember to make sure that the transmission is in neutral when starting the tractor in this fashion.
Happy Motoring
