I have a gentleman that would like for me to paint his 8N. I am not a professional painter but I painted my 8N and it turned out beautiful. He said he is nit to picky and just wants me to pressure wash it and paint it. I sandblasted mine but he does not want to got to that expense. My question is''what should I charge him to pressure wash and paint his tractor. I will be taking it apart, painting, and putting back together. He will provide the paint, etc.

What ever happemed to us 8 guys sticking together?
Is the man going to use his tractor for show? Or is he going to actually use it? Some people take these things too serious. He sounds like he is doing the same as I am. A guy is painting mine. He is going to blast it and prime and paint. I do not expect a professional job. If I did, I would take it to a place that would give me such results with a bill to boot. Do the guy a favor, Tell him exactly what it is that you are going to do at what price. Then do it. He will have a better "protected from the elements" tractor and you will have some extra cash and feel good because you helped an 8n live alittle longer. Just my opinion.

You folks are so friendly. I appreciate the advise from all who answered. I've decided to pass unless he will pay me what it's worth and do it right the first time. Thanks again!!!

I figure I have over $3,000 in my paint job counting my sandblasters, compressors, new parts, paint, thinner, spray guns, sanders, etc. etc. There is a guy around here who will sandblast and paint a small tractor for $125. Of course, that includes painting whatever dirt, grease, tires, gauges, wiring and all that he doesn't destroy with the sandblaster. I don't think this a thing you can put a price on, because to do it right would cost way more than anybody is willing to spend. That's why this tractor thing is a sickness. You do it because you want to, and charge enough to make the man think about his money. Since the prep is the hardest and most critical part of painting, why not get him to invest some sweat equity, if he's able?

so when does the long awaited video come out? With all that expensive equipment and your expertise you are really cheating the rest of us by not sharing. Come on, just do it. You could donate the profits to flood relief or search and rescue in the tall grass

Now, I can answer a question like this. SandyB gave good advice on your time. What you want is a dollar figure. You have to add that up yourself. Take what you make an hour now. Figure time and a half as you would for overtime at work. Add a few dollars for your equipment being used. Always get something for using your own tools. AS was suggested, determine the time needed to prep and paint. Use your calculator. And never ever sell yourself cheap. good luck.

Unless it is a good friend of yours I would be real tempted to pass. It seems like nobody's too picky until they pick it up. I would also be concerned about the job itself, yours turned out great because you did a complete job with lots of prep. If he won't pop for a complete prep, you may have poor results and/or it may not last. In both cases you're in a tough spot.

Just my cautious 2 cents worth

Kevin

Rick,
What's your "free" time worth to you? Come up with a figure and then figure how long it will take you to do the job. Don't figure how long it will take a professional, but how long it will take you. Figure what your materials will cost, wear and tear on your compressor and other incidentals and go from there. You might also figure whether you want to do it or not. If you can't come out on the big end of the stick, don't do it. If you're like me, I've got plenty of other things to do that I can't possibly afford to pay somebody else to do. Your time is worth something, along with your knowledge.
HTH
Sandy
