saturday past i finished bushhoggin my neighbors field and felt the urge to post this. since i bought my 8N, i have learned to slow down and take my time, which was much needed. there is a peace that comes to me when i'm working with my tractor that i dont get any other time. (sounds korny, i know). better than $100 an hour for a shrink,( dont know what they charge, never been to one) or could it be like time travel?.....i'll get up before daylight, put on my boots and overhauls, kiss the wife,( shes still in bed) go crank the tractor and head out to the field. while putt-putting along i watch the sun come up over the ridge on an overcast morning, wind stirrin just a little, see the rabbits sit and watch me go by, hear our roosters crowing, and it's not hard to imagine that its 50 years ago. i thank GOD i was born a country boy.

Redbelly, nothing corny about what you described at all! Lots of us feel the same way. When I'm on the seat of my 2N (or the red one or the green one), I don't have any problems anymore. Whether it's just a trip around my 60 acre world, hogging the pastures, helping the neighbors, parading or pulling, I feel just great! No one should "pooh-pooh" the therapy part of this either. Buying and restoring my 2N with the help of my sons and the support of my wife literally provided the therapy I needed to get me back on an even keel after a very difficult time in my life. Because of this, and even though I like my Farmall and JD too, the 2N will always have a place in my barn even though others may come and go.

Hey Dave. I liked hearing about your boys helping with the 2N restore. The support of your wife is irreplaceable. You'll never forget every part of getting through that time. A lot of us know what you mean. Even if it's a different situation. How do people get through it without family and a close friend or two? I'm glad you found something to focus on as therapy. It's just iceing on the cake that it was N. Best wishes. Dale O'9N in VA.

Dale-
Thanks for the reply. I am blessed with a great wife who loves the country and three sons who like "old stuff" as they call it. The youngest one is into old cars, the middle one is into old trucks and the oldest one is tractors all the way. He is a salesman (whoops-salesperson in today's politcally correct world) for a Kubota/Case-IH dealer and man, the "old stuff" he comes across in his travels just makes you drool! When he knows he has a potentially "interesting" day coming up, he lets me know and I try to work in a day of vacation just to travel with him,see the country and find more "old stuff." It's still out there but it takes a contact (like my son) and beating the bushes a little bit more than it did a few years ago.
Without my family and their help and support, I don't know where I would be today. You are right-a good family is the best thing a man can have. And they all pitched in and helped with that 2N, even at times when I still didn't feel ready to do much more than stand around and maybe grab a wrench. But between all of us, things worked out and progressed to the point that I am happy, confident again, and having fun. They are proud of that 2N too but not as proud of it as I am of them! Have a good day.

I say amen to that. Even though i am a trekkie theres nothing like going out and climbing on the 8n or sears ss12 and moving some dirt or working the garden or just putting through the woods and relaxing. Its hard to explain the feeling you get Steve in N.C.

RedBelly: you've got it all down pat! I don't know anyone who owns a tractor, notably an "N" who wouldn't agree with you. There's something about the sound, the feel, the movement, the ability to take one's tractor and an implement and improve, mold, change,& beautify our life around us. I was raised on a 1948 Farmall Cub which I rode from the time I was 12 until I was 17. It was a small farm in east central Georgia and back then I could not wait to get grown and find my fortune in the big city. I slaved for it for the next 30+ years. Don't know if I ever found it but I do know the day six years ago when I bought my 8n I felt closer to the fortune than I had for the past 35. Since then my fortune comes everytime I crank it, ride it, use it or sometimes just look at it.It puts me back on that rocky, hilly farm where I once had to plow to survive. Now I do it as a luxury. And I find out now that 40 years ago was not all that bad; I wouldn't trade the memories of those days, as bad as they were, for anything. I've just finished a restoration of sorts, mostly painting, but I have enjoyed the last three months of that project more than any in recent memory. To put everything in total perspective: there is no greater pleasure or satisfaction than piddling with, using or just talking to my 8n and that includes riding my HARLEY. Yes, 25 hundred to 3 thousand dollars for an 8n beats any amount to a srink and your "N" promises to sooth your soul for the rest of your life. When me and my "N" are grooving, it is a peace that passeth all understanding!

Boy, thats a good way to look at it. Life is to short as it is, and most of us guys go through it working for those illusive dreams we have. Gotta get that money, all those things. We spend more and more time away from our wives and family. just to get a little more. Many men find this type of life has cost them the very thing they thought they were working for. There family. Since most of the men I know my age are divorced at least once, it's something I've watched closely. Not wanting anything to do with it. So if we can find a way to keep our perspective, and our sanity, then we've found something of more value than money. If riding in the morning helps you look at your life, and how you act towards your family and friends, then that was a great investment. It's a lot to put on a 50 year old tractor, but if it can keep you from a shrink, it's a good thing. BE SAFE. Dale in VA.
