Holy glowing alternators, batman!

In the midst of diagnosing a starting problem, I found that my 12V delco alternator gets warm -- when the tractor is off. Almost like the battery is heating the alternator. It's not hot but definitely warm to the touch. It explains the battery drain I am sure.

I have reason to believe the previous owner did a not-so-good job on my 12V conversion.

What would a warm alternator indicate? It's brand new. I put the old one back on and it gets warm too.

The excite terminal should go through the ignition key so when you turn the key off, it will stop exciting the rotating field. If you need a wiring diagram for the Delco Si Series let me know via E-mail and I will send you a copy.

If he moves the wire to the other side of the switch I bet he has a tractor that won't shut off. I really doubt there's a resistor (or diode or light) present in the excite wiring since it sounds like it wasn't done right to start with.

Your reference to the wiring diagram should explain this pretty well.

It sounds like the rotor field is always on. Does this alternator have an internal regulator?
