Here's a picture my wife took about 1/2 hour ago, just at dark (I love this digital camera). I'm mowing part of our land with my 8N and a 5-foot King Kutter brush hog.

There are often questions posted here about whether the King Kutter will do a good job. I think it does fine - this part of the pasture is a "bottom" and it is Johnson Grass as high as the tractor hood. I'm taking it in 2nd gear at full throttle, and as you can see, it cuts clean.

For mowing my lawn around the house I have a Craftsman riding mower - but for the rest of our acreage I think the King Kutter and the "N" do just fine!

When the Craftsman gives up the ghost, try a KK finish mower. It'll probably cost less and last longer.

Really? That's the first I've heard of it. Does mowing in second gear it put too much strain on something? Tell me why, please.

Third gear is 'way too fast for mowing, but first is awful slow! Lemme know. - Sam

Yep; Zane (N Guru) says that virtually all transmission repairs he has done in his long and impressive career has been because of 2nd gear failure. And I believe that was because of using 2nd with any PTO work. I'm quoting from memory 'cause I'm too lazy to check in the archives, and maybe someone else will correct me, but there has been quite a bit posted aout this very problem. Seems the gear in 2nd is the weak link in the chain.

I thought it had to do with hitting a substantial solid object with a mower blade. Something about transferring this shock to the thinner designed 2nd gear?

You're right Dave,
The following is a paste of what Zane said regarding this issue.. I don't know how to use the Optional Link URL in a situation like this, I just copied and pasted from a discussion back on 6/02

If you are just buch hogging grass with no obsticles in the way then 2nd is OK. But if you happen to hit something really solid with it in second gear you are likely to destroy the second gear. I have repaired about 50 four speed Ford tractor transmissions over the years and 99% were second gear from bush hogging. For real!

Chuck,
It's not too complicated to stick a link in the boxes. To do this, left click on the address of web page at top of browser. It should then highlight. Right mouse click in highlighted area to get menu and select "copy." Go to "Post a Follow up" on YT. Left click in "Optional Link URL" box to get cursor blinking there. Right mouse click in the box to get menu and select "paste." Stick a title in the link title and you got it!

Kinda coincides with Redbelly's post earlier about therapy and the N..
I've got a King Kutter also and I feel it does a great job (at least in my application.) Salmoneye does have a valid point about that pumpkin color, tho.. Is that why you only bring it out at sundown, Sam? ;-)

The K.K. is sure punkin' color, all right. Maybe one day I'll have the sprayer full of Ford gray, or red, at just the right time and we'll change that.

As far as mowing late and letting the 'skeeters chew on me - that's right, but it just toughens me up for night fishing.

You guys are kind. I expected some well-deserved comment about how the Johnson grass wouldn't BE tractor-high if I'd mow it more often.

I currently am using a 6' ford brush hog... I am limited to the 1st gear due to field sizes but sure am glad to hear NOT to do the second gear thing... even clear fields are subject to unexpected items... Deer that are not among the living is a real hazard... stopped the tractor but did not due any damage. I learned a lesson to mow before the grass gets high enough to block my view of the ground
