Short version

'50 8n been in family for 45+ years sat for app last 20. Just got it running and working on hydraulics. when I lift a heavy load there's a knocking sound coming from the pump unless I open the inlet valve all the way. I've pulled the pump out and checked everything and it seems ok. What other tests can I do to isolate what needs to be replaced to fix the problem?

One thing - when tractor is idling and I raise the lift with just a boom pole attached, the lift jerks a little. I've cleaned out the valve chambers and parts with no change in operation. Could it be one of the valve chambers is not working correctly and forcing fluid into the intake stream instead of into the ram cylinder?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Roger.

You have probably got one or more faulty springs in one or more of the valves in the pump. There is an inlet valve and an outlet valve for each of the four pumps and if either is not closing properly it will cause a knocking sound when the slack is taken up in the pump excentric blocks. Most all old Ns have this symptom and it really is nothing to worry about. As long as the lift will lift the load in a fairly quick motion then that is all you need. If in fact it will raise a load on that boom pole at all at an idle I would leave well enough alone.
