I have a 1949 8N i use for finish mowing. After an hour or so,it will "spit and sputter" if you get into heavy grass. If i'm unlucky and stall the tractor,it will turn over good but will not start.A few times i was where i could coast it and it would start right up,but still ran bad under a load.Let it cool for a couple hours and it will start and run fine. I have replaced the plugs, points, condenser, cap and rotor. What next?

Thanks for any help..... Rich

Rich --
2nd reply. Since my first reply I spoke to a guy who is a sevice manager at the local New Holland dealership. He is an old "N" mechanic professionally. He listened to my discription of my tractor's behavior (identical to your description by the way) and he speculated that it was the coil. Base on his recommendation (along with the fact that I had already changed just about every other potential suspect component) I bought a coil ($30) and put it on. Bingo! I mowed four acres and was able to shut off and restart the engine whenever I wanted.
Hope your weekend troubleshooting & repair ends successfully too.
Best wishes.
P.S. -- the dealship has a coil test machine that will test the old coil. I dropped my two old ones off at the dealship this a.m. to see if their test apparatus will condem or pass them. I should hear on Monday 8/7/00.

Vapor Lock. Reroute the gas line between the sediment bowl and the carburetor.

Rich --
I have a '47 2N with the same problem. I initially thought it was over-heating, but bought a temperature gauge at TSC and the block's temperature after an hour of mowing is only about 200F. I have dismantled the carburator and fuel filter, and all is okay there. I next figured the distributer shaft felt "loose" and change the whole distributer ($200) -- no improvement. Tonight I am flushing the cooling system, but I am not optimistic that will solve the problem. Steve IA (the guy suggesting the coil) may have something, as my 2N backfires as though something has changed in the ignition timing. The roughly one hour that it takes for the tractor to act up suggests something other than engine temperature, as the engine reaches operating temperature in maybe 10 minutes, whereas the coil gets heat much more indirectly from the air coming through the radiator, taking longer to act up.

You might try replacing fuel filters and cleaning sediment bowl. It may be that it runs long enough to pull trash into filters, and instead of getting hot, it's actually starving for gas. After it sits, with no flow keeping trash in filter, it gets enough fuel to start again. It's about the cheapest thing to check too!!

Best Regards!!!!! !

Sorry about your problem. I read your post, and am now waiting for the replies. My 42 9N is doing the same thing, just like you wrote. It doesn't last as long. Only 25-30 min. I've now changed the coil, tune up parts, wires, and got a new key switch since I broke mine checking it out. Hope you get some advice I can use. One guy said it could be my manifold. A crack between intake and exhaust. The crack could open when hot. I'll have no choice but to go into that next if something else doesn't show itself soon. Hope you have better luck sooner. 1 of 2 probable causes: 1-Weak coil. Replace for about $30 USD. 2-funky key switch. Try putting a jumper wire from one side of the key switch to the other and if that fixes it, replace switch. If it doesn't help, replace coil. Check out the switch first as it is easy to test and cheaper to fix. Don't forget to remove the jumper after your test. 8^). HTH

WE HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH OUR 9N.THE END RESULT WAS A RESISTOR CONNECTED IN SERIES CIRCUIT WITH THE IGN. SWITCH AND COIL. THIS RESISTOR ALLOWES 6 VOLT TO BE DELIVERED TO COIL WHEN ENGINE IS COLD AND FUEL MIXTURE IS RICH DUE TO CHOKING. WHEN ENGINE WAS HOT AND RESISTR HEATS UP VOLTAGE WOULD DROP TO ABOUT 2.5 VOLTS. THE ENGINE WOULDN'T FIRE AT THIS VOLTAGE. I REMOVED THE RESISTOR AND WIRED DIRECTLY TO COIL. I REALISE THIS REDUCTION IN VOLTAGE WAS DESIGNED TO CONSERVE BREAKER POINTS,BUT AT LEAST THE DARN THING STARTS GOOD.FIND THE WIRE TO COIL AND MEASURE VOLTAGE COLD THEN HOT.

YOU WILL SOON BURN UP YOUR COIL IF YOU DONT HAVE A DROPPING RESISTOR IN THE COIL CKT. 2,5 VOLTS IS TOO LOW, YOU SHOULD HAVE ABOUT 3.5V. GET ANOTHER RESISTOR IN THERE.

Or buy a coil for system with no external resistor. heres a link to help diagnose coils &
condensors
