Well Zane told someone a while back to remove the inspection cover on the right side under the seat and check for leaks. I did that myself last night to figure out why my bush-hog won't stay up when I dissengage the hydro pump. Sure enough, with a load on the lift, there was a heavy stream of 90wt pouring out the end of the lift ram cylinder. I guess that's a good place to start now for repairs (once I study my FO4 and figure out how).

Question: will this leaky ram cylinder also explain away a couple of other symptoms on the lift? The lift shakes the whole tractor up and down sometimes with the load about midway between raised and lowered, and also I can hear what I guess is pump noise when the load is all the way up (no shaking with the load up all the way, just some quiet rumbling under the seat).

Thanks for all the help. Lots of knowledge here. I need all I can get to keep my "N-therapist" in good working order. %)

I would replace the ram cylinder with the piston made for the NAA series tractor. It has the Neoprene rubber ring with the leather backup washer. It is lots less likely to leak. Just hone the ram cylinder good to smooth up the scratches in the bore. It will not be possible to remove all the scoring in the bore of the ram cylinder but you don't need to for the NAA rings to seal off the oil. The scoring is caused by the grit that collects in and around the pump in the bottom of the hydraulic reservoir.
I wouldn't worry too much about the shaking and thumping of the lift. That is a fairly common thing with the N pump. As long as it will raise the load I would leave it alone when it comes to the noised it makes.
You might consider replacing the pressure relief valve while you are working on the lift. It is a troubel spot too. It is located just under the PTO on the back side of the pump.

Zane,

I'm using straight 90wt GL-1. Do I have to change this to keep the tighter ram lubricated? I like the idea of using guts from the NAA to spruce up the old N. Just want to make sure I do it right. Thanks.

The 90W will do just fine. In fact the NAAs used 90W also in the lift and gears.

That is why he is known as the Tractor Wizard.
