I PURCHASED A NEW VOLTAGE REGULATOR & BATTERY. I AM TOLD I NEED TO REPOLARIZE THE GENERATOR OR THE REGULATOR. I AM NOT SURE HOW TO DO THIS. I AM GETTING A DIFFERENT ANSWER DEPENDING ON WHO I TALK TO. IF ANYONE COULD HELP ME CLEAR THIS UP AND EXPLAIN WHAT I NEED TO DO IN DETAIL I WOULD REALLY REALLY APPRECIATE IT! THANK YOU SO MUCH! SAM

You do not really need to repolarize the generator after voltage regulator replacement although the manufacturers usuallly recommend it. The purpose of polarizing the generator is to apply voltage to the soft iron field shoes to inpart a residual magnetic field of the correct polarization. These generators will produce either plus or minus polarity depending on the residual magnetic field. Certainly, if you switch battery polarity it will be imperative change the polarity of the field poles. These generators are "Shunt" Generators and the correct way to polarize the shoes is to take a jumper wire and attach one end on the "Bat" terminal of the voltage regulator and momentarily touch the other end of the jumper to the "Arm" or sometimes called the "Gen" terminal of the voltage regulator. You should see a spark when you remove the jumper. Do not under any circumstances touch the other end of the jumper to the "Field" terminal as you can cause damage to the voltage regulator. (The high side of the field winding is connected internally to the armature terminal and is not accessible by any other means. For this reason, the access to the high side of the field is accomplished by energizing the arm or gen terminal of the generator.)
I hope this helps to explain what and why..
Happy Motoring
