I just installed a 6 volt Pertronix electronic ignition in my 1951 8N. It had not run with points and condenser since Christmas due to a sporadic ignition problem I could not isolate. When I finished installing the e-nition, it ran great! For about a minute. Now it will only fire the cylinders about once each after I let up on the starter button. It will continue running as long as I continue running the starter. Any ideas why it won't continue running on its own power?

I didn't time it after installing the e-nition because it didn't run long enough. How do I time a dead tractor?

I agree with Dell. I am no expert but I put an electronic ignition in my NAA. I had alot of problems, but with problems you learn a thing or two. I had to remove the distributor which screwed up the timing. When I put the distributor back in, I turned it until the #1 plug on the distributor cap was in line with the rotor. You have to crank the engine around until you get it close. Then I just eye balled it close. It started up OK. Otherwise, I suppose you could look at the flywheel and the timing marks and look for 0 degrees BTDC, then turn the distributor to get the rotor and #1 on the distributor cap to line up. I hope that makes sense and helps.

Ray..... .sounds like you're low on sparkies..... I would suspect you are still powering the ignition with "poor" voltage to the coil caused by bad wiring terminals. The 6 volt sided mount does not have a "ballast resistor" but your ignition switch contacts can be gunked up inside the switch and cause low tractor power (read battery volts) to the ignition system and even tho you have "Electonic Ignition", what you really have is a transistorized ignition switch (points) that is switching the battery current thru the ignition coil. They don't wear out which is a major claim to fame.

Bottom line, check your ignition switch $12 cheep. Rewire your ignition wire with professional terminals on both ends and use #14 ga stranded wire..... ....Dell
