I believe I need to replace the coil (hard starting hot) on my front-mount 8n. Any opinions/recommendations 6v vs. 12v? I use a 12v. battery, two resistors. generator doesn't work - I just put my truck battery in when I use it. Might go for 12v. alternator someday, but no current plans. thanks for advice gents.

thanks gents. this tractor has always been averse to choking warm; started first spin withoout it until recently. Except for plugs I havne't done anything to it in 15 years (low hours though)I recently did points cap etc. I'm replacing the contact plate 'cause the bushing's worn, giving a little too much gap range; & will check out the carb. After watching this forum for a little while the gen'l. opinion seems to be check out ignition first.
I'd be excited to just get this gen. running at 12v., the FNH dealer has a starter repair outfit in his shop & I'll ask about it.
Keep on rolling!

I HAVE AN 8N SIDE MOUNT WITH A 12V CONVERSION AND A 12V COIL THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE A BALLAST RESISTOR, AND IT STARTS AND RUNS GOOD. I THINK YOU ARE BETTER OFF WITHOUT THE ADDED COMPONENTS (RESISTORS) WITH A 12V COIL. ALSO I THINK YOU CAN MAKE YOUR GEN PRODUCE 12V TO CHARGE YOUR 12V BAT. YOU WOULD NEED A 12V REGULATOR TO DO THAT. GOOD LUCK

One thing you should know about the N tractor with the up draft carburetor is that they must be choked even when hot to start. If the choke relief valve on the butter fly of the choke is missing the spring on the relief valve flap it will not effectively choke.
Pull off the hose from the intake of the carburetor and see if the relief flap on the choke still has the spring. If it is just flopping around it is missing and won't shut to choke.
