OK so I'm into month number 9 on my rebuild/restore project ('54 NAA) and have run into another problem. The hydraulics have always been kind of shakey when lifting a heavy load. Someone (I think ZANE) suggested it was probably a broken or stuck spring in the pump. After taking it apart - he was right. Two of the six pistons were stuck down. No big deal - but wait what is this small allen head bolt wedged between the case and one of the pistons and how the heck did it get there? It was pretty chewed up but suprisingly the wobble head had no pits or scratches in it. I was showing a friend how the pump worked and was trying to insert the pistons but the two holes (cylinders) that had the stuck pistons would not allow any of them to be inserted. The pistons seem to be hanging up at the very top of the cylinders (I tried all six of them). I hate the idea of buying a new pump ($!$!$!). Would sanding the sides with a dremel tool or drilling out the holes be a good idea or would that cause more problems? Also, how do I remove the valve plate from the front cover? The I&T service manual says to insert a punch in the oversize bolt in the cover and drive it out. I'm not seeing this - there must be a trick or I must be an idiot!

I love my tractor don't get me wrong but I think the only thing it had going for it was that it was kept inside its whole tortured, abused life. One thing about it, its next 46 years should be a lot easier. Thanks for everyones help!

Pat..... ..sounds like you need a brake cylinder hone. Do not use Dremel or drills..... ...Dell

Does someone make one small enough - the smallest I've ever seen is 11/16 which I think will be too big?

A very effective special sized hone can be made from a length of wooden dowel and some emery cloth or wet dry sandpaper. Select a wooden dowel that is smaller then the bore. Then afix the the paper to the dowel. Insert and twirl. I've done many a master cylinder and such this way, with good success. Generally, I don't even afix the paper to the dowel, just wrapping it several times around holds it quite well.

For really big bores, I've used things like soda cans. I think I used a spray paint can for the hydraulic lift cylinder on my 8N.
