Hey guys, I have a 49 model 8-N and I was wondering what the oil pressure should read. When I first crank it I get a reading of 35 or 40 lbs. but after it warms up it goes down to about 5 or so. It is the same guage that came on it I guess or at least it looks that way so it could be faulty. I wanted to find out before I drop the oil pan what are the specs on oil pressure. It seems to be running o.k. but I don't want to harm the motor. Thanks. Ron.

I have a 49' 8N, and it is the same way. I don't really worry about it. I use my 8N to pull a 2 bottom plow and 8' disc, and the oil pressure will read 5 or 10, but it runs great.

While others on this Board have said that they run their tractors at around 10lbs. oil pressure without problems, if 5 is a true reading for yours, I think that that is just too low. I think that the assumtion that the oil gauge is right is a long shot. Use some solvent to clean out the gauge and the oil line that goes to the gauge off the engine block. Also, take off the oil pressure relief valve and put in a new spring and plunger. Change the oil and use a heavier grade. Try a can of STP oil treatment. If all that doesn't improve the situation, and if the gauge is right (a big "if"), I think it's crankshaft bearing change time, before you have a serious engine problem. My $.02.
