I am thinking of switching to a 6ft bush hog for my big fields. Has any one used one on an 8n? My terrain is pretty level and was wondering how it would do.

In my opinion it is too big. A 5 ft works o.k. unless the grass is thick and high or it's brushy. Then it bogs down. Good Luck!

Well I guess someones got to dissent and say go for it. I've got a 5' hog, and generally my quite tired and worn 8N sleeps through mowing the fields and grass and such. Just a few hours ago I was hogging down the abandoned garden plow, complete with grass up to the top of the hood. Whackety whack, and it's all cut down and chopped up as nice as you please. I really don't think an extra foot, or two even, would overthrow the N.

Interestingly, while I can hog through grass going forward, even in a high gear, I cannot hog grass going backwards. Something about the way it throws the grass around and out of the deck just doesn't work right going backwards.

As for steering and weight, you've got two wheel brakes to steer with, use them. Personally, I've never considered the steering wheel of a tractor to be the sole control of directional travel. In fact, quite often, I regard it as the supliment, and the wheel brakes as primary.

I have a 49' 8N and i have mowed with a 6ft bush hog, but it is pretty hard on the old tractor. If you don't have any wieght on front make sure your brakes work or you have plenty of room to turn.

I would see if I could borrow one and try before I buy. Also if you tie about a 100lbs on your front bumper leverage takes over and it makes a world of differance. Somebody told me that they tied a couple of engine heads to the bumper.

You're gonna be badly diappointed if you try to use a 6' bushhog behind any N series if you have any grass at all it won't pull it. When you go to raise it up the front of your tractor will be too lite to drive around.
