Odd serial # on a 9N

I recently acquired a 9N that has a distinct serial # of "9NI 798" There is a distinct space of 3/4 of an inch between the "I" and the "7". The tractor has a two compartment fuel tank which would be for running it on kerosene. The engine doesn't have soft plugs which should date it as an early 39. I know the motor isn't from a truck because it doesn't even have a boss where the fuel pump would have mounted. And industrial engines didn't have a serial number in the block. Please help me, I have stumped everyone I have asked. Thanks Pat

Pat,
I remember seeing something about the tugs used by the military having the dual fuel tank caps, your tank may be one of those. Your serial # does indicate a '39 model 9N. John Smith has a great page to help you ID and other stuff. I will include a link below. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link. The two compartment tank was on 9NAN tractors. They are not very common because to my knowledge most were for export to countries with higher gas prices. Also some were made when fuel rations were in effect. Dave who responded helped explain the space and "I" none of my other Fords have either. Pat

Your ser.# is 9N1798. The letter "I" was used for the number one. The space you tell of is common. Mine has that too. It through me off until I found out that the serial numbers were struck by hand. Dale in VA.

I wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't a very faint digit in that space in the serial #. I have seen some that were barely legible, and paint and rust can really make it tough to read. I have also seen numbers that were overstruck(double impressions) and ones that have corrections made, for instance where the 9 and 6 were both stamped in the same place, supposing that the person doing the hammering had inverted the correct number. Supposing there was a digit in that blank space, a 1940 would seem correct.

Thanks for the info. The block must be from a parts tractor then, because the rest of it looks like a late 40 or early 41. Since it has a hinged gas door and a safty starter. Its had a rough life and some parts have been changed. When I bought it sight unseen, I was gambling that it still had the special manifold to burn kerosene, it didn't but it was cheap enough to part out or just hang onto until I find a manifold. Pat
